Lesson Plan

I. This class is made up of 25 3rd grade students, 10 of the students

are in gate, and 5 of the students have IEPS but are part of the

inclusion class.
II. Subject/skill: Naming and finding information on the planets.
III. Objective: To learn about the solar system, by naming the

planets and learning different facts about those planets.

IV. Procedures:
1. Introduce the new topic for todays learning assignment.
2. Have the students name the planets.
3. Talk about the order of the planets and the trick to

remember the order of the planets.

4. I will then present my power point to show the students

how I want them to set up their own power points to

present to the rest of the class.

5. I will then place the students in groups of 2 and 3 and

assign them each a planet to present.

6. Afterwards I will pass out a rubric paper to show the

students what I am looking for when they are presenting

their presentations.
V. Materials: Computer, PowerPoint, white board, expo marker,

rubric papers
VI. Grouping structure: the students will be placed in groups or 2

and 3, the gate students will each be assigned to one planet, one

group of two will be both gate students, and each of the IEP

students will be assigned to a group with a regular student and a

gate student.
VII. Modifications: I will ask my gate students to try and be a group

leader, or provide extra help with their other partners when it is

necessary. If any of my IEP students need extra assistance I will

be there to assist them.

VIII. Assessment: I will be evaluating the students on their group

effort and as individuals when they are working on the projects

at school and presenting their parts of the project to the class.

Script
The bell has rung and the students are filing into

the classroom, putting their backpacks down and lunch

boxes into the bucket to take to the lunchroom. After

collecting all of the homework from the previous night,

the students gather to the sharing circle and wait silently

for me to announce a new assignment we will be working

on.
Miss Zerblis: Good morning everyone!
Students: in union Good morning Miss. Zerblis!
Miss Zerblis: Im glad to see everyone is here today

because today we will be talking about something really exciting.

Space! We will be learning about the planets in our Solar System.

The students look around and smile to one another,

eager to hear more about what they will be doing.

Miss Zerblis: But first Id like to name our planets, with

quiet hands lets share some of the names of the planets.

Student: Mercury!
Student: Venus!
Student: Earth!
Student: Mars!
Student: Jupiter!
Student: Saturn!
Student: Uranus!
Small giggles quietly erupt through the class

but quickly stop to hear more names of the planets.

Student: Neptune!
Student: Pluto!
Miss Zerblis: Excellent job everyone, now can anyone tell

me the order of the planets from the sun?

All of the students looked around to see if anyone could

but no one raised their hand.

Miss Zerblis: Thats ok, it can be tricky. Here is the order. I

turn to the white board and write down the names for

everyone to see. Thats a lot of names to remember, but theirs a fun

trick to help you out. It goes like this, My Very Energetic Mother Just

Served Us Nachos.

Again giggles erupt through the room and then the

students quiet down. I smile and turn to the board, saying the

trick again and writing it down. I then underline the first letter

of each of the planets to the silly saying and show how each of

the matching letters line up.

Miss Zerblis: Although it maybe silly its still a fun way to

remember the planets. Now lets move on, I am going to show you a

power point on how I want you to set up a teaching method for your

fellow classmates.

This is the time where I bring the power point set up to

show the class, describing the power point to the students and

answering any lingering questions they may have.

Miss Zerblis: I will now assign you each to a group or either two

or three, after wards one member of the group will come up here and

randomly choose a planet from the jar.

The students gather together and sit in their new

assigned groups, each with their planets and wait for further

instruction.

Miss Zerblis: Now we are going to talk about the grading rubric. I

stand and start to pass out rubrics to each of the students for

them to look at. I will be grading you as a whole and individual, what

I mean by this is that I will grade you on how well you are working in

your group and contribute to the presentation and I will grade you on

your turn to speak to the class during the presentation. I will also be

looking for how well the presentation is set up and if you made sure to

add a review and resource page at the end of your presentation. Are

there any questions?

None of the students raise their hands

Miss Zerblis: Excellent, if you do have a question later on please

make sure to ask me. But for now you may all get started on your

projects.
