ME101 (Engineering Mechanics) 2015-2016 Sem. II

9th Feb, 8:00- 8:55 am Total: 60 Marks

 Closed-book and closed-note examination
Mention clearly the free-body diagram and sign convention wherever applicable

Q1. Figure 1a. In the structure given below, all connections consist of frictionless pins,
rollers, or short links. In each case, determine whether (a) the structure is completely,
partially, or improperly constrained, (b) the reactions are statically determinate or
indeterminate, (c) the equilibrium of the structure is maintained in the position shown.
Assume, W as self-weight of the plate. [6]

Q1. Figure 1b. Two transmission belts pass over a double pulley that is attached to an axle
supported by bearings at A and D. The radius of the smaller pulley is 125 mm and the radius
of the bigger pulley is 250 mm. Knowing that when the system is at rest, the tension is 90 N
in both portions of belt B and 150 N in both portions of belt C, determine the reactions at A
and D. Assume that the bearing at D does not exert any axial thrust and no moments at point
A and D. [14]

Q2. Figure 2 For the frame and loading shown, determine the components of all forces
acting on member ABE. [20]

Q3. Figure 3 (a) Draw the shear and bending-moment diagrams for beam AB, (b) determine
the magnitude and location of the maximum absolute value of the bending moment. [20]
