Language Analysis

The article A Study of Big Data Characteristics [1] is a literature review of big data. The

current article is in the IEEE format and it is a Data Analytics fields academic article. This

article is authored by three authors, that indicates the collaborative nature of the article [2] also

the following example supports the argument This paper has identified & defined three new

characteristics of big data to be explored further to handle big data efficiently [1]. Generally the

academic and research papers published by the scholars in IEEE papers are one or more in a

single article hence the usage of pronoun is very less [2].

The article consists of sentences in which negative terminology was used, at the same time

the usage of the positive words. The sentences were developed addressing the issues in the

article which were to be concerned, for example, But the challenge is that it is too large, too

fast, and hard to handle for traditional database, and existing technologies. [1]; But some

gap still exists which need to be addressed in order to get better insight in the area [1]. The

word not is negative word [2] or any such academical terms was rarly used through out paper.
Author mentioned the concern to improve existing technologies but he did not mention the direct

negative terms. Hence in the article the language usage is more appropriate.

In addition, because of the huge volume of big data, traditional methods for managing

extracting and analyzing the same are not very useful as these may not provide accurate result for

decision making etc [1]. From the given quotation the term etc is used only after a single

example decision making , which implies that the information is not sufficient and expression

is vague [2]. The writer has used very few etcs and most of the times the writer gave much

needed information in the article. In this context writer is describing about how the traditional

methods are not useful in todays technology, hence the need to mention the more examples, on

where these apply were not considered important.

Through out the paper author avoided using passive voice [2]. Fig. 1 shows the exponential

growth of big data volume with time [1]. Author is using passive voice [2], , this is most

common in academic articles specially in IEEE journals. since the writer addresses many

scholars and research developers, who go through these articles, so it is apt to follow passive

voice.

Most of the sentences in the article, the adverbs are placed in mid position or final position [2].

For example In November 2015, New York Times has published an article over DNA, which

discusses about a genomics company in China [1]. This is because the author gives the

information about what he wants to convey first, which is better for understanding for the users.

Big data is evolving to satisfy the needs of many organizations, researchers and

Government [1]. The split infinitive is used here for the avoidance of ambiguity and proper

construction of grammar [2]. In the article author informs the different characteristics of big data
in different ways as well as uses many different structures of the sentence where the information

seems the same but different. Hence the usage of too many words or repetitive information is

only for the better understanding different technical meanings and what they mean in different

context. The author chooses to uses vocabulary, which is from the data analytics subject and

every sentence is a description of big data which indeed are technical terms. Hence the usage of

varied vocabulary and technical terms are appropriate in the academic writings.
