Benajah Guernsey Roots, civil engineer, educator,
agriculturist, and abolitionist lived in this home. Benajah G.
Roots' documented involvement in Underground Railroad
activity stems from his physical and protracted intervention
in the case of freedom-seeker Jim Gray in October, 1859, as
Roots sought through legal redress to prevent Gray's
kidnapping by slave catchers. Roots presented testimony
regarding the Gray incident as a defense witness in the
Chicago trial of John Hossack in February, 1860. B. G.
Roots' participation in the Gray incident tends to lend
credence to oft repeated family tradition that Roots was
active in the Underground Railroad and that his Locust Hill
property served as a station (both the original log-cabin, no
longer extant, the 1850s mansion), and as a small post-
Emancipation settlement and burial ground for former
freedom seekers. Unfortunately, extensive twentieth century
alterations to the property's landscape, buildings and
structures have destroyed these purported hiding places and
habitations. Present owners Calvin and Jean Ibendahl show
hundreds of school children and other visitors the mansion
and property, Root family artifacts, and tour a log cabin and
one room school that they have restored and relocated to the
property.
/forum/afr

entirely by students, using bricks made also by students
under Taylor's supervision. The project epitomized
Washington's philosophy of instilling in Tuskegee students,

with additional passengers joining them, the driver ordered
Mrs. Morgan and another black passenger next to her to give

The sheriff boarded the bus with a warrant, but Mrs. Morgan
threw the warrant out the window and kicked the sheriff.
She was eventually arrested by a deputy and jailed. Enlisting
the help of the State Conference of the NAACP, Irene
Morgan appealed her case through the local, state, and
Supreme courts. Her lawyers, Thurgood Marshall and
William Hastie, argued that it was a burden to interstate
buses. The Supreme Court ruled in Mrs. Morgan's favor in
1946. A song written soon afterwards declared, "You don't

In the early 1960s, the American struggle for civil rights
hit full stride in the Deep South. A thousand miles west in
Phoenix, two enterprising black leaders, Lincoln and
Eleanor Ragsdale, dedicated their lives to the struggle for
desegregation of schools, neighborhoods and areas of public
accommodation in Arizona. Their efforts for racial equality
in the southwest played an integral and enduring role in the
larger American civil rights story. During the Civil Rights
Movement, the Ragsdale?s and other leaders in Phoenix
focused on a number of key fronts. The first effort focused
on the desegregation of hotels, restaurants, and other areas
of public access. In 1953, Eleanor Ragsdale used her real
estate license to purchase a house for the family in an All-
White neighborhood, and in doing so, initiated a residential
desegregation movement which resonated throughout the
State. And they were, to a certain degree, terrorized when
they moved into the home. They were then greeted with the
"N" word in big black letters on their white block wall on
the side of their house. The purchase of that first house in a
White neighborhood was a declaration of dignity and /forum/afr
possibility. It was a statement. You know, "we can do this, ican-

In 1961 Preston King went on trial in this courthouse for
draft evasion. King's troubles with the draft board
began in 1956 when he had to enter the draft board office to
clear paperwork for academic deferment before studying
abroad. Once he entered the office, the board learned he was
black and refused to call him mister in future encounters. In
1958, the draft board refused to give King an
extension of his academic deferment and sent a letter to him
demanding he report for a physical. King refused to respond
to the letter because it was addressed to "Preston" as
opposed to "Mr. King." This act of defiance against the
disrespectful draft board, led to King's 1961 trial for draft
evasion. King was found guilty by an all white jury and was
let out on bail. While on bail, King fled to England and lost
his U.S. citizenship. President Bill Clinton pardoned him,
and in 2000 King returned to the United States.
/forum/afr

the log cabin that later became known as Uncle Tom's
Cabin. Harriet Beecher Stowe's best selling novel was based
on the autobiography written by Henson. In the
autobiography Henson recounts his experiences as a slave in
Maryland; his first memories includes a heartwrenching
description of his father after he was beaten by his enslavers.
Josiah Henson was born in Charles County, Maryland
in 1789. However, after his family was sold and
scattered, Henson and his mother ended up in Montgomery
County, the site of where the cabin is located, on the
plantation of Isaac Riley. There Henson worked as the
superintendent of farm operations for some time until
Riley's mismanagement of finances forced him to send
Henson and accompanying slaves to Kentucky. Henson
wrote in his book, Josiah Henson, Formerly a Slave,
of the free African-Americans that he encountered
along his journey to Kentucky. While in Kentucky, Henson
worked to save enough money to buy his
freedom after his return to Rockville, Maryland.
Upon his return to Rockville, Riley reneged on his
agreement to emancipate Henson forcing him and his This "was home (for more
