Apple Tree Making Music-Gr 1.-p. 228 (CD 7-23)

Unpitched percussion instruments (UPP)
Mallet instruments (at least two)
Copies of Resource Book-p. G-7-Signing for Apple Tree

Lesson Process:

Day 1-

Sing Apple Tree. Have students join in with a steady beat. When they are ready, ask them
to join in the singing as well.
Practice steady beat and rhythm. Use various body percussion and ask students to choose
which body part to use for the beat/rhythm.
Teach Apple Tree game and perform a few times.
o Similar to London Bridge.
o Students in standing circle. Two students standing opposite each other with both
hands joined and arms up so others may pass under them.
o While singing, students walk under the apple tree until the last word, out.
o On out the two students bring their arms down around whoever is under them
and they are out. If no one is there, then the next students that would be under
them is out. The out person says ouch pretending an apple fell on their head.
o Those who are out will sit to the side and sing while performing a steady beat or
the rhythm of the song using instruments or body percussion.
o If you have the time, the winner is the last one to not get hit on the head with an
apple.

Day 2-

Review the song with steady beat and rhythm.

Play the game for a couple of rounds.
Guide students as a group to create an ostinato pattern using ta/ti-ti/rest.
First, have students sing the song while Teacher performs the ostinato pattern on UPP.
Have a student or two join you until the students are able to sing in two parts proficiently.
Eventually, youll split the class in half. One singing the song while the other performs
the pattern.
MIX IT UP-Create a new pattern and have a few students use the new pattern with you.

Day 3-

Review song & game again.

Create ostinato pattern like before with a small group performing it on UPP.
Discuss how we can add layers to music. [Non-musical reference-7-layer dip;
sandwiches]. Create a B section of Apple Tree.
Use one barred instrument to demonstrate question and answer. Remove bars to make it a
pentatonic scale [in D. if F# is not available, use C pentatonic instead]
Discuss-Questions move up in pitch, Answers move down.
Use rhythms for Will ap-ples fall on me? for the question and No, they will not fall on
me. [4-beat patterns using ta & ti-ti] for the answer.
Select students to play the Q & A on only two instruments. Remind them they can play
any bars as long as they start and end on the correct end of the instrument. Add other
students & instruments when they are comfortable.

Day 4-

Review song & game.

Explain ASL [Amer. Sign Lang] to students briefly.
Demonstrate the entire song.
Teach to students phrase-by-phrase.
Sing and sign. Begin VERY slowly and practice a couple of times.
Print and distribute Teacher Resource Master sheet for them to practice on their own.

Conclusion:

Eventually, you will combine all parts together. Layering is probably what will work best with
this age group.
