Committee: 1
Topic: Syrian refugee crisis
Delegate: Jacquelyn Hurtado
Opening Statement
Approximately 13.1 million people need humanitarian assistance in Syria.
Throughout the whole middle east, more than 1 out of 20 people are displaced and
Syrians are being forced to leave their country seeking refugee status in neighboring
countries, for example Iraq or to further countries. This is a global issue that needs to be
addressed, about 4.8 million Syrian refugees or more are in 5 of the neighboring
countries (Lebanon, Turkey, Jordan, Egypt and Iraq.)
National Actions
Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, aka ISIS, is in Iraq. In 2013 Syrians who went to
Iraq and were granted refugee status were trapped in Iraqs own conflicts with their civil
war, dealing with ISIS and helping those internally displaced. Iraq is struggling to take
care of the Syrian refugees that they have on top of 3+ million people that are internally
displaced. Iraq wants to help but not being able to take of those that are internally
displaced in the country will make it more difficult to help refugees.
