connections to the text or document, in an effort to pique the
readers interest in reading the entire book or document.

Set Up
Provide copies of excerpts from the reading to each
participant.
Provide the participants with paper and writing utensils.

Facilitator Role
Ensure all participants have passage excerpts, paper and
writing utensil. The facilitator guides the process and also
acts as the time keeper.

Process
1. Participants are given 3-5 minutes to read the first
passage and answer the following prompts:
What is your gut reaction to this passage? (What
resonates with you? What memories or thoughts does it
stir up?)
What implications does this passage have on your
current role at work?
Does this pique your interest to read more? Why or
why not?

2. The facilitator chooses 1 volunteer to read their reactions

to the passage. The reader is is given 1 minute to
summarize their thoughts on all of the prompts.

3. The facilitator then chooses 1 volunteer at a time to react

to the first participants thoughts. (Volunteers may add on to
the 1st participants thoughts, and build on their ideas.)
Depending on time or willing participants, the facilitator may
choose other volunteers to continue commenting on the
original volunteers thoughts.
4.Depending on time, the facilitator may choose other
volunteers to share their minute thoughts on the first
passage, and the process repeats.

5. Read the next passage and repeat the process.
