Tutorial 1

Understanding the Individual

Outline
This tutorial investigates personality types,
values and similarities and differences of
individuals in the class. You will learn a bit
more about yourself as well as your
classmembers and gain an appreciation of
how your values and personalities may be
different, yet complementary.
Activity 1 Introduction
Everyone gets into pairs and take turns in

1. Introducing yourself
2. Say why you chose this subject
3. What is important to you
4. One strength
5. One weakness

Spend 2 minutes then swap with your partner.

After both turns identify 1 similarity, 1 difference and 1

complementary attribute with your partner.
Activity 2 - Salivate
1. Get into pairs ( with a new partner)
2. Your challenge for this game is to make the
other person salivate as quickly as possible.
You have 1 minute to do this by which time It
becomes your partners turn to make you
salivate. (total 2 minutes). Raise your hand as
soon as you start salivating.
3. Discuss. What did the other person say to
make you salivate/what was their approach?
Activity 3 Values Game
Values Game everyone is randomly given a
value card and you randomly walk and meet
class members who you may wish to exchange
your value card with the one which is more
important to you. You will be holding only one
value card at any time.
At the end you will be left with the one which
you really value (?)
Game 4 Personality Test
1. Do the personality test if you have not done so yet:
http://www.humanmetrics.com/cgi-win/jtypes2.asp (5mins)
2. Note this somewhere and then walk around and find the table
which has a sheet with your personality type.
3. Once everyone has arrived turn over the sheet, read the
statement and put a Y if they agree with the statement, an M
if maybe or H for half agree, and N if they dont agree at all.
4. Discuss with class how reliable is the personality test? What
does it tell you. What doesnt it tell you?

(keep this with you as you will also need it to do this survey later in
your own time or at the end of the tutorial:

What Do You Do?
A project is doomed to fail as the budget is low.
The only way you could keep the project on track
is to let go some of the team members (i.e. fire
them). What do you do?
A. Keep going as it is and do your best and hope
youll be able to make it as you dont want to
hurt the members.
B. Let go off several team members so that you
could ensure project has a higher probability of
staying within budget as the project is more
important.
Discussion
1. To what degree do you think your choice is
based on your
personality type/nature?
your own values
values of your parents, society/environment/culture
etc?
2. Do you think your personality type may change
in time/experience?
3. Do you think your values may change in
time/experience?
