1. Learning To fully understand the difference between Satire vs. Parody

2. Anticipatory Set After watching the Satire vs. Parody video that I showed them
in the previous class, I will have them write down the general
definitions of both a parody and a satire for 5 minutes.

3. Lesson Objectives Have students understand the difference between satire and
parody by identifying parodies/satires they see in everyday
media.

4. Input Will explain the students about the upcoming project they will be
assigned, which will ask them to find either a parody or a satire
that they know of from their everyday life. If it is a parody, they
will find the original film and do a voiceover of the form of media
that is mocking the original using iMovie, Youtube, or
MovieMaker. If it is a satire, they will find a satire and create a
prezi showing the satire and explaining the issue that the artist
was demonstrating with facts on the issue.

5. Check Understanding I will show multiple examples of parodies and satires and have
students answer if they are either parodies or satires. This
activity will take about 10 minutes.

6. Guided Practice Have students get in groups and discuss which form of comedy
they would rather do for the project: parody vs. satire. They will
brainstorm what shows or videos they have seen that could fit
the needs of the project. The group discussion will take about 10
minutes.

7. Independent Study After the group discussion, the students will then go back
individually and write a proposal on their projects. They will write
which form of comedy they have chosen and then write what
media they have chosen for their form of comedy. Then, they will
write their reasoning behind their choice and write how their
media fits the characteristics of a parody/satire.

The Prompt
The purpose of this project is to understand the difference between satire and parody
using mass media.

Students will create a either a video or a prezi, depending on which form of comedy they choose
to pursue. Students have a choice of either choosing a parody or a satire. If students choose a
parody, they will find a parody and also find the original work that they parody is mocking The
student will do a voiceover of the form of media that is mocking the original media using iMovie,
Youtube, or MovieMaker. If choosing a satire, the student will find a satire and create a prezi
showing the satire and explaining the issue that the artist was demonstrating with facts on the
issue. Remember that you are reflecting the writers opinion on the satire, not your own personal
opinions. The student is basically making a persuasive prezi that is trying to persuade the ideas
of the original writer.

Students must also turn in a rationale along with the final project. The rationale should consist of
which form of comedy they chose for the project and which mass media they chose to
demonstrate the forms of comedy. Students will then write a short 200 word explanation on how
your project is either a satire or a parody.
