What’s new in Plimmerton?

July 2010
Railway station refurbishment steaming along
On 10 October 1885 scheduled train services between Wellington and
Plimmerton began. Now we are working towards reopening our refurbished
station on 10 October 2010. To date 70 individuals (aged 18 to 80 plus) have
contributed to the project with 450 hours of volunteer effort by expert
trades people, teams of toilers and people providing sustenance for the
workers (no sleepers here! A great track record!).
The refit has begun with ceilings and wall linings throughout. These will be
plastered and ready for painting in July.
Preparation of the exterior starts now and donated doors are being installed
to bring back the 1940 look (the year the second station building was built).
And windows will be fitted with security glass.
In coming weeks Kiwirail will install new CCTV at the station to provide
security cover to both platforms and internal areas. Later the passenger
parking area in the domain and the underpass will also be covered (down the
track).
On Saturday 24 July 1-2pm there’ll be an open afternoon at the station so you
can come along and see progress, review the colour scheme, talk to the
project team and … if you can drive a paintbrush or scraper … you may like to
sign up for a morning or two to help with the painting!
Working bees every weekend now with only 15 working Saturdays left till the
reopening. We need all shoulders to the wheel. Our hard working project
managers are always keen to hear from you … Allan Dodson 233 1087 and

I’ve run out of railway related puns so there’s coffee vouchers for the best

sponsor families and individuals.

this fantastic community project there’s still an opportunity, contact us

Footpath safety discussions

Safe footpaths are essential in a thriving community. Families out and about,
the elderly, kids scootering to school, mums with prams, joggers and dog
walkers … we should be able to use our footpaths safely at all times. Barry
Cook says, “We are working to ensure that trucks and other heavy vehicles
are kept in the centre lane of State Highway1 as it transits our community.
We want this agreement enforced to ensure that transiting monsters are kept
well away from our footpaths.
If you’d like to support Barry’s negotiations contact us

Plimmerton Kindergarten’s mid winter dip was a fantastic success despite

Our library is open in the pavilion on Wednesday afternoons and Saturday

and staffed your community library for so many years.
The next councillor clinic is on Saturday 26 June in the library.

held more often tell Lisa or one of our vundabar volunteers.

Family Store
Thanks to Elvyn and her team of friendly volunteers who are doing such a
great job to make the store so varied and interesting. Remember them when
you are spring cleaning but please leave things (clean and usable items) with
them during work hours. That is 9.00am to 4.30pm, Monday to Friday and
10.00am to 4.00pm on Saturdays. Or discuss with Elvyn where to drop off
goods out of those hours call 233 1313.
We all know that the proceeds from Salvation Army stores go to assist needy
people in our community but that does not some people from stealing
donated goods from outside the shop - please contact the Police if you see
this happening.
