Edward St.

John Learning and Teaching Center opening summer 2017

COLLEGE PARK, Md. The Edward St. John Learning and Teaching Center The University
of Marylands first academic construction in 50 years is scheduled to open for the summer
2017 session.

Edward St. John, a Class of 1961 alumnus and Baltimore-area developer, gifted the university
$10 million to jumpstart the state-of-the-art campus centerpiece.

University President Wallace Lohs goal is to integrate creativity, innovation and entrepreneurial
mindsets across campus.

Centrally located on Mckeldin Mall, the 180,000-square-foot building contains the Academy of
Innovation and Entrepreneurship and the Teaching and Learning Transformation Center. The
center revolutionizes traditional lecture halls.

Hilary Gossett, assistant director of academic facilities, champions the buildings TERP (teach,
engage, respond, participate) classrooms.

"We're hoping to usher in a new innovative


way of thinking about how we teach and
learn on our campus, Gossett said.

22 classrooms, labs and study spaces will


host over 12,000 students daily. Its ultra-
modern technology fosters the seamless
collaboration between students and faculty.

Redesigned rooms include tiered-


collaborative, 6round, eye2eye and media
share to host team-based exercises in
flexible environments.

Dean Chang, associate vice president for innovation and entrepreneurship, says that everyone at
the university regardless of academic path can utilize the Edward St. John Learning and
Teaching Center.

"There are open spaces where you can have a quick huddle with classmates about projects; there
are enclosed spaces too and also the classrooms are focused on collaboration. All of which will
really help students come together," Chang shared.

Professors can request space in the building beginning for the summer 2017 session.
