Charter vs. Public schools

The school your child attends has a dramatic impact on their success. This is a big

concern for students who want to have a better life than they are living right now. Your child's

academic success can be hindered by classmates behavior, education system, and environment

around the school. In general, the type of school can impact your child's academic success in a

good or horrible way. If you are a reasonable parent, you want the best for your child success.

Dont worry, there is a solution for you, the best school for your child to attend would be Charter

schools. Charter schools provide better academic success for students than Public schools, this

can have a direct impact on the student's academic success and their surrounding community.

The San Fernando Valley has schools such as San Fernando High school, a public school

and Vaughn International Studies Academy a charter school. San Fernando high school opened in

1896 and Vaughn just opened in 2005. These schools are located with each other and already

have a big difference on students academic success. How is it that Vaughn has a higher

graduation rate than San Fernando high and it just open in 2005 but San Fernando been open for
a long time. Can it be how their education system is set up for the students and the surroundings

in the school.

On a Tuesday morning, Vaughn International Studies Academy students enter from the

left side red gate entrance of the school while the principal observes them if the students wore

the dress code of the school. The uniform can be a black, white or blue polo shirt and

shorts/pants. Some students didnt wear the dress code so they were sent back home to get the

correct uniform. As the students walk in, there are cafeteria ladies serving free breakfast to the

students. The majority of students get breakfast, some just put the breakfast on the food tray

because they don't want it.

Once they got their breakfast the students head to their advisory. The students are seated

by their last names in alphabetical order. Once they all sat down the teacher announces the

schools news. The students have to get out their reading books and read. Majority of the

students read their book. Advisory only lasted for 30 minutes. Then once the bell rang, the

students were dismissed to their first period. As students came in for first period the teacher

made the students put their backpack and cell phones at the end of classroom. Then the students

sat down on their assign desk. As teacher begins her lecture the students take notes and paid

attention to the teacher. The students were quiet, not distracting anyone. They were mostly tired

because it was still morning. The student were cooperative and mature. The teacher didn't have to

interrupt her lecture at all. First period went smooth. Then it was second period and the students

were the same. Then it was break after second period. Some students play soccer, basketball and

mostly all the students were seated at the tables outside talking to each other. Everyone gets

along with each other.

They head to their third period and the students are energized, ready to learn. The teacher

Mrs. Defranco goes over the lecture again and the students took notes and this period went swell.

The fourth period students came and this class went extremely well. After this period, it was

lunch time. The students line up in three lines at the cafeteria at the back of the buildings. The

students are just talking with each other while waiting to get their free lunch. After the students

go to the tables to eat their lunch. These students at Vaughn are friendly and so kind. Some

students would say hi to me when i'm eating food at the tables too. After lunch the students head

over to their next class. The students were acting good, taking notes and paying attention to the

teacher. Then the last class of today and most of the students seem tired but they still managed to

take notes. One student was falling asleep, but the teacher made him stay awake by tapping on

his shoulder. After the class was over, all the students left the classroom to go home. Some

students started to walk home and some students were waiting to get picked up by their parents.

Overall the teacher cared about the students and her way of teaching was easy to learn and

simple to understand. The students were amazing and cooperate so well. Its like this school is a

big community and care about each other.

At San Fernando high school, the students enter school through a large black fence while

the cops stand next to this gate observing the students if they look suspicious. The cops only

detained a couple of students because they look suspicious due to their clothes. These students

wore big hoodies and baggy pants. There is no dress code for the students. Students had to pay

for their food, but wasnt that expensive. Majority of students dont get any breakfast, they just

bring their own food. Then the students would go to their homeroom. I went to the classroom I

was assigned to Mrs. Monica the biology teacher. This class has freshman and sophomores

students. In advisory the students didnt want to read and they were being distractful for the
students that were reading in the class. The teacher had to tell the students to calm down and

keep their composure. Two students were sleeping in advisory. They didnt want to read at all.

First period, students came in and took a seat waiting for the teacher to start her lecture for class.

Students were being noisy and a couple of students werent paying attention due to their phone.

The teacher had to stop the lecture to get the students to stop messing around and pay attention.

Second period students werent as noisy as first period. They were paying attention, but also

getting distracted by their phones. After second period, it was break for the students. Everyone at

this school were separated in their own cliques. These groups were separated by race. The

Latinos would hang out with each other. These groups would give off negative vibes. Some of

these students would smoke and had liquor with them. The saddest part of it all was the security

guard would see and would not do anything about it. Being outside didnt feel safe at all. After

break, third period students were absolutely loud and the teacher had to stop numerous of times

to control the students. She didnt get to finish the lecture. Fourth period, students were paying

attention to the lecture while taking notes as well. Lunch is next and students ate from their own

lunch and some students would get the food from school. They would separate in their groups

and the tension between these groups are tremendous. Some students are cautious where they sit

down because of the groups. These students are rude to each other saying negative words. The

students were not productive in the next two periods, but they still were able to learn.

San Fernando high and Vaughn are extremely different. Each high school students act a

certain way and their surroundings are completely opposite. Vaughn has friendly, caring students

that want to learn. San Fernando has students that seem to not care about school and distract

other students that want to learn. Students that want to learn at San Fernando dont feel safe at all

and are exposed to negativity from bad students. Vaughn students feel safe and doesn't have to
worry about other students. Vaughn teachers want the students to learn and challenge them to

learn the material. San Fernandos teachers do care about the students and want them to pass as

well, but some student dont seem to want that and don't care at all. These student seem to drop

out and go to a continuation school to graduate.

At Vaughn, it was mandatory for the parents to get involved in the school. The parents

and principal have meetings discussing ways to make it a better school than it is . They would

talk about fundraising and which classes to add that are important for the students. San Fernando

has fundraiser and want the parents to get involved, but it's not mandatory. Some parents do not

know about their child's education and their success at the school. These parents are probably

working all the time or simply dont care. Parents who dont get involved at the school are

hindering their child success and doesn't even know it. These students end up not going to

college and getting jobs that pay minimum wage. Worst case scenario these students drop out and

do things that harm the community.

Charter school wants the best success for their students and wants parents to get

involved to become a community. They truly care about each student and want them to have the

best education possible preparing them for college or their future. Charter school dont tolerate

any bad behavior from the students and want them to get involved in school to become a

community. Therefore, charter schools would be the best choice for your childs academic

success.
