COLLEGE PARK, Md. The dorm an incoming freshman is placed in can make or
break a persons college experience. Most incoming students at the University of
Maryland are placed on North Campus where a majority of freshmen live.

On South Campus there are a few first year housing options including Carroll Hall.
There will be a major change for this dorm during the upcoming 2017 fall semester.

It has recently been announced that Carroll Hall will be an option for substance free
housing next year.

The building is extremely small and fits 121 students. Resident Life is able to make
the entire building substance free because of its size. Other benefits include location,
no triples or quads, and a lower price.

Sophomore Computer Science Major Chris Graves is a former resident of Carroll
Hall.

I think it makes sense that Carroll is an option for substance free housing. It is one
of the smallest dorms of campus so I understand why they chose this dorm in
particular he said.

Although there are a few benefits to the building many students complain about the
amenities, or lack thereof.

Carroll Hall is insanely outdated. The biggest problem is no air conditioning. I even
have to keep my windows open in the winter to keep cool said Carly Lyon, a
freshman Chemistry Engineering Major.

Despite these undesirable features, one thing that many former and current Carroll
Hall residents agree on is that the small size of Carroll Hall makes it feel like home.

Being in a smaller dorm allowed me to be a lot closer to the people living there. So
many kids I know who lived on North Campus said they didnt even know everyone
on their floor. I was lucky enough to know my entire dorm, said Graves.

When Carroll Hall was originally built Graves along with any other male student
would not be allowed to live in this building. This dorm was originally built to house
female students.

Carroll Hall is one of the oldest buildings on campus considering if was built in 1954.

It is named after Carroll County in Maryland. This county is named after Charles
Carroll of Carrolton. He was one of the individuals to sign the Declaration of
Independence.

This substance free housing program will eventually need to be relocated to another
building. This is due to the fact that Carroll Hall will be taken down in the upcoming
years as part of a construction and renovations project.

According to the On-Campus Student Housing Strategic Plan Carroll Halls planned
demolition is scheduled for the summer of 2020.
