Students draw quick pictures and count ones to determine if they need to compose a ten for the
sum.

Add within 100, including adding a two-digit number and a one-digit number, and adding
a two-digit number and a multiple of 10, using concrete models or drawings and strategies
based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition
and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used.
Understand that in adding two-digit numbers, one adds tens and tens, ones and ones; and
sometimes it is necessary to compose a ten
Common Core Lesson Objective:
SWBAT add two digit numbers by using images to count tens and ones

INTO
Step-by-Step Anticipatory Set/Orientation
Teacher models adding two digit numbers by drawing quick pictures of 10s and 1s for
each addend, counting ones to make a group of 10, composing a ten, and adding total of
tens of ones.
Teacher will use steps included within worksheet as a guide for students to use for
remainder of lesson.

THROUGH
Teacher guides students through steps of drawing tens and ones, counting ones, trading
groups of ten ones for a ten, then adding tens and ones for sum for 1st problem on front of
handout.
Gradual release for problems 1 and 2 (back side of sheet 1)
Students partner share the steps to solving problems (first I draw a quick picture of my
tens and ones)
