History of the Atom by Jeremy Fischer period 5

442 BC-Democritus a Greek philosopher originated the thought that all mater is
composed of indivisible elements. Democritus hypothesized that all
matter cannot be destroyed.

1803- John Dalton a British chemist, and physicist, developed a theory that matter
is simply composed of atoms of different weights and are combined by ratios in
weight. He also stated that atoms of different elements have different weights.

1870- cathode ray testing with sir William crooks

1896- Wilhelm Rontgen discovered that certain chemicals glow when near the
cathode rays, he later named them x rays.

1898- JJ Thompson discovers the electron using the cathode rays. He also
discovered that there are particles even smaller than atoms such as protons,
neutrons, and electrons.

1900- Max plank introduced the quantum theory, creating protons in the process. Maxwell also stated
that electrons rotate around the nucleus of the atom.
1905- Einstein discovered that Light only can move in wavelengths. He also made a statement that
particles in gas and liquid are always moving.
