Through strong religious devotion and realization of a corrupt Church, Martin Luther
sought to doctrinally change the church, by making another. Luther was disgusted at the sale of
indulgences and the practice of simony and pluralism. However, King Henry VIII sought
political gains, as he closed the monasteries, leaving the land to himself. Furthermore, Henry
wanted to divorce his wife, whom the Pope had given him special permission to marry. This
rendered a problematic situation of Papal authority and fallibility. These motives can be
separated into doctrinal, political, and social gains and losses.
