Due: Feb. 5, 2008

1. Find the temperature of the inside face of a wall as a function of time t if the wall
is of thickness L, conductivity k, and diffusivity a2 given that:

u (0, t ) H u ( L, t )
= , = 0, u ( x,0) = To , where H is a constant.
x k x

2. What is the form of the one-dimensional heat equation if the cross-sectional area
of the rod is a function of x?

Note: (a) The rate of heat flow across a surface is proportional to the area of the
surface and the normal derivative of the temperature (change in temperature per unit
change of distance perpendicular to the surface), (b) The rate at which a body gains
(or loses) heat is proportional to the mass of the body and the time rate of change of
temperature.

3. Determine the steady state temperature of a 1x1 square plate whose flat sides are
insulated if the top and bottom edges are maintained at 100o while the left and right
edges are maintained at zero. What is the temperature at the center of the plate?

4. The corners of a rectangular membrane are given by A(0,0), B(2,0), C(2,1), and
D(0,1). If the edges of the membrane are fixed and the membrane is released with an
initial velocity of sin(x)cos(y) and with an initial displacement xy(x-2)(y-1),
determine the subsequent displacement of the membrane.
