changes during puberty

I have done some interviews to my classmates about their changes in puberty. In

this interview I asked them about how they changed in physical and mental state.
The question I asked them were:

1. Has puberty started for you if so how old were you

2. Have you had any problems because of puberty?
3. What do you like/dislike about puberty?
4. Have you noticed big changes in your body lately?
5. Do you think your emotions/way of thinking has changed after puberty?
First I interviewed a boy at the age of 13 year old. When I asked about when
puberty started with him and if he had problems with it he told me that he had no
problems because of puberty and he wasnt sure if he went into puberty at the
age of 11 or at the age off 12. When I asked about his likes/dislikes about puberty
he said that I would not like to reply to this answer so I continued to the next
question. We also talked about the changes in his body and he said that there
were no changes in his body but mentally he changed a lot mostly in the way
how he thinks about things.

The second person I interviewed was a girl of 13 years old. She told me that
puberty started for her at the age of 10 years old. I was very surprised with her
answer about my second question: have you had any problems because of
puberty? And she told me; I have never had any problems and I asked about
her period if that never stopped her from doing something but she said: not at
all so I was very surprised. Then I asked about the likes and dislikes for puberty.
The answer was very funny because she told me that she likes to be taken more
seriously and she got more male attention but she didnt like periods. For the rest
she thought that nothing else really changed in her body/mind.

Was it planned to
become pregnant
and was it easy?
It definitely was planned, but
my mother was really scared
of not getting pregnant. That
was because in the past when
she was 28 years old she had an
operation from a severe form of
endometriosis. It was so severe
that the fallopian tube on the right needed to be removed. Because my mother
had a serious form of endometriosis both fallopian tubes had to be removed, but
because they were so young and didnt have any children, the gynecologist has
ensured that the left fallopian tube still continued to function.

How did you feel during pregnancy and what changed your body?
Because it was really hard to get pregnant my mother was super happy and very
proud! My mother was really happy that she got pregnant in a natural way and
that the hospital didnt need to help her with getting pregnant. However, at the
5th week of pregnancy she started to throw up. Again it was really severe and she
had been admitted to the hospital for 5 times to prevent dehydration. When my
mother was 20 weeks pregnant she only weighed 45 kilograms. So a visible
change in her body was that she became extremely thin. When my mother began
to recover for a bit her belly began to grow really big and lots of moisture was
held. After she gave birth her hair became really thin. Also after birth she luckily
gains weight and came back on a good weight.

How did the delivery go and how did you feel?

In 2003 on the 23th of April at 8 oclock in the evening her water broke. My dad
called the obstetrician and she came to check whether everything was ok,
everything looked good. The obstetrician went home. The day after at half past 6
in the morning the obstetrician called and ask how she was doing. At 7 oclock
the obstetrician was in our house and my mother already had 10 centimeters

dilation. When you are at 10 centimeters of dilation you have an 1 hour to give
birth in your own house. If it takes longer than 1 hour you have to go to the
hospital. The contractions started at 7 oclock in the morning and at 2 minutes
past 8 she gave birth.

 STIs
Diseases that can only be transmitted by sexual contact are called sexually
transmitted infections or STIs. STIs do not only occur with sex but with all kinds
of homo/heterosexual contact. This includes kissing or oral/anal sex. An example
of an STI is chlamydia. This bacteria is found in the urethra and vagina by people
between 15/30. This bacteria blocks the possibility of making children for girls
and it can infect your anus, vagina and urethra. Most of the people who have
chlamydia dont have any symptoms or signs of a disease. This means that they
can still infect people without even knowing it. Mens can have the following
symptoms: watery urine, pain when urinating or/and pain on the testicles. The
symptoms for women are: pain when urinating, pain when having sex and pain in
the lower abdomen. Chlamydia can be treated with antibiotics but if you dont
this can have drastic consequences.

Aids is another good example of an STI: The best known STI is aids. This is the
most known disease because of its deadly result. Aids trys to disable the
immune system of the host. This is dangerous because after aids had won you
will probably get sick from some kind of sickness like cancer. It is highly possible
for Aids patients to have multiple diseases at the same time. This is why there
are not any specific symptoms. Aids can originate even 10 years after having the
intercourse which transmitted the disease. If you do an Aids-test and it comes out
positive you will be send to an HIV(Aids) treatment center. Here the will treat you
as well as they can, but unfortunately there has not been invented an cure. There
are medicines to stop the development of aids but you would have to take these
your entire life. These medicines also have side effects which makes living for
Aids patients even harder.

Well now we have looked at what can originate from sexual intercourse. But now
lets talk about how to prevent it. Well you probably heard about condoms, the
pill or female condoms. Well there are more contraceptives. These are: IUDs
which are inserted to the vagina and stays there for 5 years. These little hooks
block the embryos from leaving. You also have morning after, but these should
only be used as last resort as these have an high amount of varying chemicals.
There are also sticks of hormones which are placed under the skin of your arm.
These sticks release hormones slowly and this makes you unfertile for an amount
of time.

contraceptives, the male condom is a

best protection against STIs (e.g.
gonorrhoea, chlamydia, HIV).
The female condom
The female condom offers 95%
effective protection for pregnancy, as
well as some protection against STIs.

You have the choice between two types of
IUDs: hormonal or copper-based devices.
Hormonal and copper IUDs are part of the
few long-term solutions, meaning that you
can keep them inside the vagina for up to

types of contraceptives that offer long term
protection. It lasts for about three years on
average. Just like IUDs, the implant does
not protect against STIs.
The contraceptive sponge
The sponge is a small, round-shaped foam
placed deep inside the vagina. It contains
spermicide so that sperm does not get past
the foam. You should leave the sponge
inside the vagina for at least six hours after

Physical changes during puberty

The difference stages in human life.

In a human life, you go through these stages: fetus, infancy,
childhood, adolescence, adulthood and old age. The fetus stage is also called the
embryonic stage. The human life cycle starts at fertilization, the fetus stage. The
second stage is the infancy which is the period between birth and 1 year. In this
stage a child learns to walk and eat solid food. Early childhood follows after
infancy. The childhood period last from the age of 1 till the age of 10. The first 2/3
years of childhood the child is called a toddler, during this time the child is able
to talk and be more self-sufficient. Between the age 3 to 6, the child gets more
creative and become more developed in interacting with each other,
playfulness. The age of 6 till the age of 8 is called the middle childhood in this
period the imagination of a child gets stronger. This imagination is a source of
creative inspiration in later life. In the last 2 years of childhood which is at the
age from 8 till 10 the child gets more independent.

Adolescence is the 4th stage of human life. This stage starts at the age of around
10 and ends approximately at the age of 18. It is a critical turning point because
puberty takes place. The body changes, emotions are heavier expressed and they
begin to separate from their parents and become more independent. Adulthood
comes after adolescence. Adulthood is the longest stage in life and normally last
from age 18 through old age. Adulthood is when human beings are fully grown
and fully independent to live life how they want it. At the end of the human life
cycle the last stage has arrived, old age. The body starts to deteriorate and the
life cycle eventually ends in death.

Primary and secondary sex characteristics.
Primary and secondary sex characteristics show the difference between an adult
and a child. A child is a primary sex characteristic and an adult is a secondary sex
characteristic. During puberty you start to look different, some physical changes
take place. When secondary sexual characteristics are showing up it means
that you are starting puberty.

Sex steroids
Sex steroids are also called sex hormones. These sex hormones are responsible
for controlling reproductive function and sexual development. The process of the
increase of sex steroids is when a human reaches puberty. The brain makes a
substance called gonadotropin which releases hormones. The release of these
hormones stimulates the production of these steroids in both females and
males. Estrogens and progestins are female sex hormones and androgens are
male sex hormones.

Estrogens are a group of hormones that are mainly produced by the

ovaries. Estrogens control female sexual development, the growth and function of
female sexual organs. Also other secondary characteristics develop.

Progestins are naturally occurring groups of steroid hormones. It prepares the

inner lining of the uterus for pregnancy. If pregnancy occurs
the progestins maintain the uterus during the pregnancy. It also prevents
ovulation by the ovaries during pregnancy.

Androgens include the male sex hormones: testosterone. Androgens works the
same as estrogens. Androgens stimulate the development of male sexual
characteristics and development of male sex organs.

How the body changes during puberty.

Girls:
Between the age of 8-14 years, girls start to develop breasts and hair starts to
grow. Also the shape of the body changes. Your hips get bigger and your waist
gets smaller. Some girls gain weight quickly during this time, although they sport
enough and eat healthy. Weight gain is a natural part of puberty.

In puberty you may get more sweaty. That is because you sweat glands becoming
large and more active. Also the pores in your skin become larger and your skin
gets more oil, acne can arise. Not only your skin gets more oil also your hair. A
new routine for washing your skin and hair will be good for your body.

As a teenage girl you will get your period. A period is also called menstruation.
Blood is released during menstruation. A girls period last between 3 and 7 days.
For the first 1 or 2 years, your periods can be very unpredictable. After these 1 or
2 year your periods starts to even out. Eventually, your cycle will settle into a
regular pattern thats unique to your body.

Boys:
Boys start puberty between the age of 11 till 16 years old. When puberty starts
many physical changes take place. Their chest and shoulders broaden and their
muscles start to develops. This physical change takes place at the age from 10
till 19. During puberty boys mostly go through a grow spurt. A growth spurt is a
rapid growth in height over a span of 2 to 3 years.

Also during puberty the voice starts to get deeper and hair begins to grow on the
face that later develop into a moustache and beard. Not only hair on the face
starts to grow also on the chest, in the armpits, in the groin area and on the legs.
