Lesson Plan Type: Cooperative Learning

Grade Level: 8th grade

Subject/Topic -Interactions of Earth, Sun, Oceans, and Weather Systems

TimeLine - 135 minutes (3days)

TEKS objectives

8.10 Earth and space. The student knows that climatic interactions exist among Earth, ocean,
and weather systems. The student is expected to:

8.10A Recognize that the Sun provides the energy that drives convection within the
atmosphere and oceans, producing winds and ocean currents. Supporting Standard

8.10C Identify the role of the oceans in the formation of weather systems such as hurricanes.
Supporting Standard

Lesson objectives

In this lesson, students will explore how the Sun provides the energy that drives our wind and
ocean currents. Additionally, they will investigate the role of oceans in the formation of
weather systems including hurricanes. Students will relate the interactions of the Earth,
ocean, and weather systems to our climate.

Materials

Beakers, ice water, warm water, food coloring, pipette or eyedropper, colored pencils, glue or
tape, teaspoon or scoop, tablespoon or scoop, computer with internet and worksheet.

Introduction

This lesson bundles student expectations that address how interactions in solar, weather, and
ocean systems create changes in weather patterns and climate. During this lesson, students
learn how the Sun provides energy that drives convection within the atmosphere and oceans
producing winds and ocean currents, as well as addressing the role of oceans in the formation
of weather systems such as hurricanes.
Instructional Activities and Procedures (Day 1)

1-I will ask them warm up question (3 minutes)

How do convection currents in the ocean affect weather? (I will accept all answer at this
time)

2-I will inform my students todays activity and during the activity they will find this question
answer.

3-They will have three station and I will read procedures for each station before they perform
the investigation. I will remind them safety rules.

4-I will divide the class into groups of four.

5-I will distribute the worksheet and before start I will make them read the procure with their
group.

6-They will record observation their worksheet and answer the questions.

7-I will tell them how they will rotate the stations.

8-After they complete the station, I will pose some questions for make sure they understand
what they did.

How do convection currents in the ocean affect weather?

How are ocean currents produced?

What provides the energy that causes wind and ocean currents?

Modifications/Differentiated Instruction

Group students who need more guided practice together I will spend more time with them. I
will let the other groups work more independently.

I will make group students with mixed needs and have them work together.

I will monitor all groups.

Evaluation (Formative and/or Summative Assessment)

End of the class, I will give them questions to answer individual and whoever can't respond
to the question I will ask other group members to help him/her to explain it. Also, I will tell
them whoever answer the question they will get an extra point for their weekly participation
grade.

How do convection currents in the ocean affect weather?

How are ocean currents produced?

What provides the energy that causes wind and ocean currents?

Closure

Students quickly and verbally share one thing they learned in the class today activity with
me.
