Instructions

Total time: 15 minutes

Only pen, pencil, eraser, ruler, calculator, and printed copies of relevant IS codes are allowed.
The maximum marks for each problem are indicated next to the problem.
Make necessary assumptions and state them clearly.

1. Name typical slump patterns obtained through Slump test. What indication about characteristic
of concrete, in addition to the slump value can be determined from the pattern of slump? [3]

2. Mention whether given statement is true or false with supporting argument On adding water
reducers or high range water reducers (plasticizer) to concrete, Workability of Concrete will
reduce. [2]

3. In calibration of Air blaine apparatus, it was determined that the weight of empty cell is 123.74
grams. On adding 2.75 grams of standard cement, the weight of cell, cement and mercury was
found out to be 185.55 grams. On filling the cell fully with mercury (by placing 2 filter papers
in cell) the weight obtained was 208.3080 grams. Temperature maintained during test is 27 C.
All other required assumptions and information can be taken as per IS 4031 (Part 2): 1999.
Determine:
Bed Volume of the cell. [2]

Mass of cement required to obtain a bed of porosity 0.500. [2]

4. Mention a location where high degree of workability (Slump of about 100 to 150mm) is required.
