Harvey Wiley
Wiley was a medical doctor who proved that adding certain chemicals to foods and
drugs was dangerous. His campaign against mislabeling led to the passage of the Foods
and Drugs Act of 1906. Wiley was the original--first at the Food and Drug Administration,
where he became known as the "Father of the Pure Food and Drugs Act. He became
director of the bureau at Good Housekeeping. During his 19 years in this profession, he
led the fight for tougher government inspection of meat and the creation of pure foods.

Upton Sinclair
From birth Sinclair was exposed to dichotomies that would have a profound effect on his
young mind and greatly influence his thinking later in life. Ultimately, it would be Sinclairs
political convictions that would lead to his first literary success and the one for which he is
most known. The contempt he had developed for the upper class as a youth had led
Sinclair to socialism in 1903. His novel The Jungle, exposed filthy conditions in
meatpacking plants, leading to the passage of the Meat Inspection Act of 1906.

Stuart Chase and F.J. Schlink
Stuart Chase and F.J. Schlink published Your Moneys Worth in 1927, a book
demonstrating how misleading advertising impacts people. Mr. Schlink was the
co-founder, with Stuart Chase, of the Consumers' Club, which sought to protect the
consumer by publicizing defective and unsafe products.

The Consumers Club became the first independent organization to test and report brand
named products.

Rachel Carson
In 1962, her book Silent Spring exposed the
damages of insecticides and pesticides, which lead
to many new environmental laws.
Silent Spring is Now a Noisy Summer was the
title of an article in the New York Times discussing
the commotion her book had caused for the
chemical industry
Her books were able to raise awareness about
climate change and nature in general.

Ralph Nader
He has advocated for consumers in areas such as air
travel, food, and insurance
Most known for his book Unsafe At Any Speed, which
advocated for consumer safety in cars
Argued that flaws in the construction of cars caused
many accidents
Made headlines when GM privately investigated Nader
Nader later won a lawsuit against GM for these
investigations
