Portfolio Section 1: Who Am I?

Professional Profile

In my time as an agricultural science student in high school, there were

many courses that I took which I feel helped me to develop strengths in

agriculture, as well as participating in other projects and activities such as

Supervised Agricultural Experiences and Leadership Development Events or

Career Development Events. The courses that I took in my high school

agricultural science program were Principles of Agriculture, Food, and Natural

Resources, Livestock Production, Equine Science, Advanced Animal Science,

Veterinary Medical Applications, Mathematical Applications in AFNR, and

Wildlife, Fisheries, and Ecology Management. I also participated in raising

SAE projects of cattle, sheep, pigs, and broiler chickens. I participated in

LDEs such as Creed Speaking, Radio, Ag. Issues, Chapter Conducting, and

FFA Quiz competitions, as well as CDEs such as dairy, horse, livestock, and

meat evaluation. I feel that all of these courses, projects, and competitions

combined to help me acquire diverse strengths in agricultural science. I

believe that in the classroom courses, are just as important to education and

knowledge as out of the classroom events and projects. Some of my

strengths in agriculture and life sciences are animal systems, nutrition and

reproduction, plant science, professionalism in agriculture, showing and

handling animals, and demonstrating all around knowledge in agriculture.

Aside from general agriculture sectors that I feel I have a lot of knowledge in,

I do also feel that I have an amount of expertise when it comes to

leadership in agriculture, mainly by my involvement in the LDE and CDEs

that I participated in, which is why I feel that all aspects of the FFA

organization play a part in enriching students and members combined with

the courses taken in the actual classroom setting. Although I do feel I have

many strengths when it comes to agriculture, there are several areas where I

wish I could gain more experience in, such as cattle, even though I raised

cattle, I always wished I was more knowledgeable in the raising, showing,

and feeding aspect of cattle. I also feel that I have weaknesses when it

comes to areas such as agricultural mechanics, and agribusiness. All of these

strengths and weaknesses combined, as a prospective agricultural science

teacher, I hope to gain and implement knowledge in all of these areas

throughout the course of my career, in order to fully assist and educate

students to the most of my ability as their teacher.

I personally feel that I have several traits that have inspired and

prepared me to teacher agricultural science as a career. In high school, I

found that the FFA organization, and agriculture, is a distinct, and very

important subject that plays a huge part in every single persons life,

whether I know it or not, which is why I would like to teach agriculture, and

the importance of it, to students who may or may not thoroughly know or

understand agriculture and the important ideas and implications it has in this

world! I am certainly an easy going, easy to please, and easy to approach

person, and when people talk to me, I hope that they get the sense that I am

going to listen, and try to understand them as fully as possible. I hope that

my students see these traits in me, and know that they can come and talk to

me whenever, and about whatever they need to. Weve learned in class that

trust, is a characteristic that agricultural science teachers need to establish

and possess with their students for success and advancement. Trust is

another characteristic of mine that I take pride in, and hope that my students

and I establish this as much as possible in my FFA program. In taking the

personality tests, I agree that I am a verbal, active, and sequential learner. I

feel that my students will learn best if I verbally give instructions, as well as

define instructions on handouts and class projects. I truly feel that I do my

best, when I understand what is expected of me as a student, and I feel that

this trait will be useful when it comes to teaching students, and ensuring that

they understand what is expected of them as students, and what I expect of

myself as their teacher. I personally like to develop ideas and learn from

others in a classroom setting, therefore I will stress the importance of group

collaboration, and thinking with peers in my classes. I like reading and

writing strategies when learning, and feel that if students read information

off a PowerPoint, then expand on the information in their writing, they will

fully gain knowledge, and that my teaching will encourage thought. As a

prospective teacher, I hope that I can keep all of these traits and ideas in

mind, in order to understand and engage with my students, and keep an

open mind to all of the possibilities of learning and application techniques to

further my students knowledge and application of agriculture both in the

classroom, and in FFA and real life!
