DTMF MICROPHONE KMC-18/KMC-18A INSTRUCTION MANUAL KENWOOD CORPORATION GOOMNA)>I INTRODUCTION Thank you for purchasing this KENWOOD micro- phone. This product has been manufactured from the highest quality materials available using the latest engineering techniques. PRODUCT OVERVIEW ‘The KMC-18 is a rugged microphone capable of. sending DTMF tones withits illuminated keypad. This microphone is functionally equivalent to the KMC-18A in Manual Dial mode. The KMC-18A is a fully programmable DTMF micro- phone equipped with eight memories and nine operat- ing modes including Auto Dial, Store & Send and Last Number Redial functions. The KMC-18A can be used in either the Operating Mode or Programming Mode, Operating Mode: This is the normal mode used after programming the desired functions in Programming Mode. Programming Mode: Numerous functions canbe selected and set-up. This is the mode used to store telephone numbers in memo- ries and set the DTMF timing parameters. All program- ming is stored in reliable permanent memory (EEPROM), ACCESSORIES ‘The following items are included with your microphone: 1 Microphone hanger set (J19-1511-X5) tea 2. Instruction manual (B62-0354-X8) ---—--—-1 copy PRINCIPAL FEATURES 1. The KMC-18is equipped with a backlit keypad that is particularly handy for night use, or when operating indimly litareas. The multifunctional KMC-18A {features a three-step programmable keypad dim- mer with bright, dim and off settings. 2. The HOOK assembly switching function elimi- nates the need to ground the accessory microphone hanger 3. Theconnectorized, coiled microphone cable ‘employs 8-pin (microphone end) and 6-pin (trans- ceiver end) modular connectors that greatly reduce the time required for cable changes. 4 Setting up the following functions is easy when the KMC-18A\is in the Programming Mode: (a) Eight DTMF numbers (e.g. telephone numbers) ‘of up to 22 digits each can be stored using the DTMF keypad. (b) A ConnectDisconnect ANI code up to 17 digits. in length can be stored, (0) A total of nine different operating modes are available. These nine modes consist of various ‘combinations of the three operating functions (Auto Dial, Store & Send, and Manual Dial) plus the Last Number Redial function. Referto Table ‘for the available modes and functions. (@) The send duration of DTMF tones can be varied. ~ Digit width and duty cycle of tones are select- able. ~ The first digit can be setionger than other digits. ~ The ** and "#” tone durations can be set longer than other tones. = The delay time from the moment the PTT is pressed until DMF tones are sent can be altered - PTT-OFF or PTT-ON pause time can be inserted ina series of DTMF tones. (e) The fourth column tones (A,B,C,0) can be sent when using Auto Dial or ANI. (f) Total contro! of on-hook and off-hook status is possible including reverse conditions if required. (g) The DTMF keys can be disabled to prevent acci- dentally sending DTMF tones while communicat- ing with other stations. 5. Pressing a DTMF key automatically switches on the PTT and disables the microphone. 6 The DTMF Transmit Hold Time of the KMC-18 is fixed at approximately 1 second; the KMC-18A Hold Times adjustable 7 confirmation Beep Tone (Control Tone) sounds ‘each time a key is operated. This functions active permanently with the KMC-18; the function can be toggled on or off with the KMC-18A. OPERATING MODE FUNCTION OPERATION 1. Manual Dial DTMF tones are sent out exactly as entered via the keypad. When using Manual Dial with Auto Dial, ‘Store & Send, and Last Number Reedial (all ex- plained below), the [+] key cannot be used to send the" * DTMF tone. Example: Send "555-7018" Enter: 5557018 Sent: 5557018 2 Auto Dial (KMC-18A only) Retrieves and sends DTMF tones stored in mem- ory. Amaximum of eight 22-digit numbers can be stored. Pressing the [+ ] key and then a key corre- sponding to a previously saved memory (memories 1108) sets the PTT line to Low, and sends the DTMF tones contained in the specified memory channel. Example: Retrieve and send contents of Memory 4. Enter: *4 Sent: 5557018 To write into memory, refer to "Memory (Auto Dial) input" in the Command Table (Table 6) on page 7. Pressing the [] key and then the PTT cancels Memory Select. a a 3. Store & Send (KMC-18A only) DTMF codes are entered manually. Pressing the [#] ‘Send key activates the transmit mode, and the DTMF tones associated with the codes entered are then sent. Up to 31 digits can be entered and stored. If a 32nd digits entered, an error tone sounds, and all digits already entered are discarded. Data to be sentis stored temporarily in RAM, and. transmission begins only after all data has been input. Pressing the PTT while entering data erases digits already entered. ‘The send timing and duration are the same asin Auto Dial. Example: Send "555-7018". Enter: *5557018# Sent: 5557018 4 Last Number Redial (KMC-18A only) Retrieves and resends the tones for the string of DTMF codes last entered either by Manual Dial or Store & Send. The send timing and duration are the same as in Auto Dial. Last Number Redial can send a maximum of 31 digits. Example: Resend the last number entered and sent. Enter: #0* Sent: 5557018 5 HOOK Assembly ‘The HOOK condition is controlled by interaction between the microphone hanger and the microphone hook on the rear of he microphone. The assembly provides off-hook and on-hook conditions after remiov- ing or replacing the microphone respectively. Auto- matic Number Identification (ANI) can be programmed tobe transmitted on off-hook or on-hook. Itis not necessary forthe assembly to be grounded since a built-in switch, which functions independent of whether the hangeris at ground potential, is part of the design. ‘OPERATING MODES FUNCTIONS (Select in Programming Mode) 172]3/4]5]6|718]2 ManualDial | @ e| lelelele ‘Auto Dial e e| le ‘Sore & Send e| [ele| le Last Number ele ele Redial Tablet PROGRAMMING MODE (KMC-18A Only) ‘There are two modes available within the Programming Mode as follows: 41) Memory Input Mode 2) Set-up Mode 1. Setting the HOOK Status ‘The user may select reverse hook conditions for both on-hook and off-hook. In addition, standard hook conditions (i.e. Low for on-hook, and High for off-hook) may be selected. 4 Enabling/Disabling Keypad during PTT Opera- tion ‘The user has the option of enabling or disabling the keypad to inhibit DTMF tone transmission while the PTT is held down. 5. DTMF Minimum Duration ADTMF tone sent manually may not be received correctly if the duration of the tone is too short. Setting a minimum send time reduces the risk of faulty dialing. Extending shorter send times to preset values reduces the risk of faulty dialing no matter how briefly the keys are pressed by the user. Default: 70 ms Variable range: 10 ms to 2500 ms in 10 ms intervals; 100 ms intervals above 1000 ms 6 DTMF Maximum Duration When sending DTMF tones manually, the key for ‘each digit must be pressed for a minimum time; however, pressing the key too long will only lead toa waste of airtime. Moreover, if key remains de- pressed for any reason, transmission will continue needlessly, wasting air time and generating heat. To resolve this problem, a maximum send time is established that prevents transmissions from exceeding a specific duration no matter how longa key is pressed Default: OFF (Continuous tone while key is pressed) Variable range: 10 ms to 2500 ms in 10 ms intervals; 100 ms intervals above 1000 ms 7 DTMF Transmission Rate ‘The transmission rate is the numberof digits sent ‘out within a 1 second period when using Auto Dial, Store & Send, or Last Number Redial. Although this ‘may be understood more easily if expressed in ms in the form of Digitinterdigt Time, "dps* is com- monly used, Default: 8 dps Variable range: 1 to 15 dps 8 TMF Duty Cycle ‘The Duty Cycle is the Digitinterdigit Time ex- pressed as a ratio when transmitting DTMF tones in Auto Dial or Store & Send, Defauit: 50:50 ‘Adjustable range: 50:50 or 60:40 9 DTMF Rise Time Represents the elapsed time from key input until a DTMF tone is actually sent. The PTT is set auto- matically to Low when data is entered via the keypad. However, delay is provided in order to accommodate different transmitter attack times. Default: 100 ms Variable range: 0 to 2500 ms in 10 ms intervals; 100 ms intervals above 1000 ms 10 DTMF Transmit Hold Time ‘Transmit Hold Time is the transmit time period after releasing a DTMF key when using Manual Dial to ‘the moment transmit retumsto receive. The pur- pose of the hold characteristic is to maintain a continuous transmit state while a series of DTMF keys are pressed. Default: 1000 ms Variable range: 10 to 2500 ms in 10 ms intervals; 100.ms intervals above 1000 ms The Interdigit Time is the minimum time period between digits if the keys are pressed consecutively when using Manual Dial. This time is designed to reduce false decoder operation by providing a fixed time period between digits, similar to DTMF Mini- ‘mum Duration (Item 5) and First Digit Time (Item 14). Default: 50ms Variable range: 10 to 2500 ms in 10 ms intervals; 100 ms intervals above 1000 ms 12 DTMF Transmit Pause A transmit pause can be inserted between a series Cf digits when using Auto Dial to transmit DTMF tones. Inserting pauses allows an unbroken series of tones to be segregated into tone groups. More- over, the microphone allows either PTT-OFF Pause or PTT-ON Pause tobe selected. The former forces ‘a receive mode pause until the [4] key is pressed, and the latter inserts a transmit mode pause until the [ ]keyis pressed. Resuming transmission on con- clusion of a PTT-OFF Pause causes the DTMF Rise Time and First Digit Time to be applied. 13 “* "and "#" Tone Duration ‘The Tone Duration is the send time of the "x" and “#" tones. This function is required by some sys- tems in which these tones must be set longer than ‘numeric tones. This setting defines how much longer the *" and "#* tones will be. However, ita transmission starts with the "x" or "#* tone, the microphone compares the Tone Duration with the preset First Digit Time, and adopts the longer of the two. Default: 50 ms Variable range: 0 to 2500 msin 10 ms intervals; 100 ms intervals above 1000 ms 14 First Digit Time ‘The First Digit Time is the tone length of the first di when using Auto Dial or Store & Send. Like the DTMF Minimum Duration (Item 5) and the DTMF Rise Time (Item 9), First Digit Time is intended to reduce the possibility of improper decoder opera- tion, This feature extends the send time of the first digit compared with subsequent digits. However, i ‘a transmission starts with the " X* or “#* tone, the microphone compares the preset First Digit Time with the * x" and "#" Tone Duration, and adopts the longer of the two. Default: 100 ms Variable range: to 2500 ms in 10 ms intervals; 100 ms intervals above 1000 ms 15 Beep Tone On/Off ‘The Beep Tone circuit generates key operation con- firmation tones and false operation error tones from the built-in speaker. Default: ON 16 Back Light Dimmer Sets the illumination of the keypad. One of three settings can be selected (Ot, Dim, Bright). Default: Bright 17 Single Tone The microphone can emita total of eight single tones for test purposes, ie. four column and four row tones. 18 Memory Number Clear Erases previously stored numbers only 19 Set-up Data Clear Erases all data that was registered in the Set-up Mode, such as time intervals, but does not erase numbers stored in memory.
