Adam Randall was thirty years old and he looked like a rock star. He was very handsome, with long
blonde hair. He knew most of the other members of the Andrea Gails crew. He had fished all his life
and he knew a lot about fishing boats. When he saw a boat, he knew at once if it was safe or not.
Adam had driven to Gloucester that morning with his father-in-law. Hed walked around the
deck of the Andrea Gail for a long time, not saying very much. Then finally he had got off the boat and
gone back to his father-in-laws car.
Im not going out on that boat, he said. Im not going to take this job.
What are you saying? asked his father-in-law in surprise. You really need this job, Adam.
You havent worked in three months and you need the money. Whats the problem? The Andrea Gail is a
very good boat its one of the best swordfishing boats on the coast.

walking around her I felt a cold wind on my skin. I think that none of her crew is going to come back

Adam thought for a while.
No, he said at last. I cant do that. I cant tell them that they are going to die.. And maybe Im
