Annotated Bib : How music can affect mental health and mood.

Academy of Finland. "Music Listening Habits Tell About Mental Health." ScienceDaily.

ScienceDaily, 22 October 2015. Accessed 30 April. 2017.

In this article the Academy of Finland talks about how images of the brain can show how

nerves react to all different types of music. They have found that music really affects the

emotions of individuals. Music is used by clinical music therapists to help relieve any depression

their patients are having and to brighten up their mood. They found that people who listen to sad

or aggressive music tend to react poorly and have anxiety, particularly in men. They argue that

music does and will continue to help those that battle depression and anxiety. They reference a

neuroimaging study by Emily Carlson from Frontiers in Human Neuroscience and this provides

more evidence that they are providing valid information. This source was published and written

by the Academy of Finland. There isnt very much bias. This article provides statistics and data

that will be really helpful for my research project and also provides another study done by

researchers at the University of Jyvskyl. This article over all will be very useful for my project.

Suomens article expresses how music affects emotion regulation and help disorders like

depression. He also found the men who listened to negative music tended to have less activity in

the medial prefrontal cortex, but females had increased activity. He believes certain music styles

can have greater effects on the brain and emotions. This information is valid because it was

published by medical news today and also cites many different studies by doctors and scientists

that studied this field. There might be bias because he is an expert in the field and has a huge

stance on side of the argument and truly believe that music affects mental health. This article will

provide me with different ways music can help with depression and exactly how it does.

Kemper, Kathi J. "Music as Therapy." March 2005. Accessed 30 Apr. 2017.

This article talks about how music is used to improve well-being and reduce stress and

help patients with mental illness. Many ways that music is used in hospitals is represented in this

article and can be useful information for my project. This is a valid article because it is written

by people with PHDs and is published by CME. It not only talks about how music helps but

specifically what types of music and what ages are more affected by music. This contains very

useful information that fits perfectly for my topic and research.

McCraty, Rollin, and Bob Barrios-Choplin. "The Effects of Different Types of Music on Mood,

Tension and Mental Clarity." 1 July 2005. Accessed 30 Apr. 2017.

McCraty and Barrios-Choplin did a study with the help of a few others to find out what

effects certain types of music had on mood, tensions and mental clarity. They found that certain

types of music negatively affected many people and some types positively affected them. This

article provides lots of statistics from this study and lots of evidence of how music affects

peoples mood. There could be bias because they are mental health specialists, This article will

help my research by providing statistics and what types of music make the most impact on

mood.

In Music and Mental Health by Edward Podolsky, Podolsky claims music is one of the

best medicines for the mind. Podolsky provides information on how music can help the mind and

also talks about many other people who have done studies and research on this topic. Many

people who have taken interest into this field are in this source along with the information they

have found. This source with help me greatly in finding more studies on the topic and general

information that he has provided will be helpful. This source is very valid and is even published

in a book and is published by the National Association for Mental Health. This will be very

useful for my research.
