Weekender #10

Three solids are labeled A, B, and C. You job is to identify each one. It is known that
the compounds are potassium chloride, sodium carbonate, and magnesium sulfate.
Various tests are done and the results are tabulated below.

B 7 No change No change
C 7 White precipitate No change
forms

a) Identify A, B, and C

A=
B=
C=

b) Write the chemical formula and name the precipitate that is formed.
c) Explain why compound A has a pH of 10. Write an equation to support your
anser.
d) Describe the steps in preparing 100. mL of 1.0 M NaOH using a stock solution
of 3.0 M NaOH using all or some of the following equipment; a 50 mL buret, a
100 mL volumetric flask, distilled water, and a small dropper.
e) Describe a simple lab test that would distinguish the sodium carbonate from
calcium carbonate. Be sure to specify how the results of the test would
indicate the identity of the carbonate.
