- Brunei received independence on 1 January 1984 and its an end of the British Protectorate State of Brunei. Official name of
the country is Sultanate of Brunei
- President Sukarno of Indonesia actively supported The North Kalimantan National Army (TNKU) in order to overthrowing the
Sultan of Brunei and uniting the whole of Borneo ( a giant, rugged island in Southeast Asia Malay Archipelago, is shared by the
Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak, Indonesian Kalimantan and the tiny nation of Brunei.) under Indonesian rule.
- The first phase of sharia law, which include fines and prison sentences for crimes such as pregnancies outside of wedlock,
propagating religions other than Islam, and not attending mandatory Friday prayers, has been rolled out.
- Brunei is currently in the process of implementing the second phase, which will introduce harsh punishments such as floggings
and cutting off hands for property offenses.

-During periods of economic slowdown, the challenge lies in matching the demands of the people with the capacity of the state.
The Sultanate tries to adapting and adjusting its political structure to meet the challenges. One technique used is the ideology of
Melayu Islam Beraja (MIB) which allows for the essential role of Islam at the state level, and has enhanced the legitimacy of the
Sultan. MIB runs the risk of alienating and marginalizing the non-Muslim population
-The flag was adopted on September 29, 1959. The flag features the country's national emblem. Yellow represents the Sultan of
Brunei, and the black and white stripes represent the country's chief ministers.
-The present size of Brunei was reduced after ceding the island of Labuan to Britain by signing the Treaty of Labuan.
-Treaty of Labuan was signed by the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland and the sultan of Brunei on 18 December 1846.
Therefore, the Sultan of Brunei needs to give this island to British and its size was decreased.
-The Island of Labuan was part of Brunei since the reign of Muhammad Shah who was the first sultan of Brunei.
-Labuan Island was considered as the Sultanate's gateway to the outside world and a strategically sited to protect Brunei interest
for the China trade route between Brunei and Manila. After Manila fell, it increases the trading activities in the Island as a taxes
increased. Moreover, it increases the number of traders who came for water supply and coal which are the resources that exist in
the Island. Due to its economic potentials, it attracted the foreign interest.
-During that time, the foreign power started to come to the Southwestern Asia and expanded the power in the region. British
realised that they need to have a permanent harbour which is Labuan. For British, it will be used as a port to harbour their ships
which makes the interests grew further. At first, the Sultan refused to sign the treaty but the British navy invade the Sultans
palace withe cannons. The sultan had no choice so he ceded the Island to Great Britain.

-Brunei National Day ('Hari Nasional' in Malay) is always celebrated on 23 February. This holiday marks full independence from the
United Kingdom in 1984. It is the National Day of Brunei.
-In 1959, a new constitution was adopted which declared Brunei a self-governing state, though foreign affairs, security, and
defence matters remained under the control of Britain.
-Sultan Hashim Jalilul Alam Aqamaddin was the 26th Sultan of Brunei. He ruled Brunei from May 1885 to May 1906. Sultan Hashim
was the son of Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin II. Before he became the Sultan, he was one of the four Wazirs in Brunei and was known
as Pengiran Temenggong Sahibul Bahar Pengiran Anak Hashim.

-Armed Forces Day is celebrated every May 31 to pay tribute to the dedicated men and women behind the Royal Brunei army. You
will see displays of artillery, exhibitions, parachuting, and military parades.

sight in streets and on buildings. A large parade is held in the national stadium, and it has become a tradition for people to visit
their mosques and offer prayers to celebrate the country's independence.

responsible for the formation of the Department of Religious Affairs. Moreover, he was also concerned about the insufficient time
allocated for religious instruction in government schools, and authorized the government to request for assistance from Johor.
