Piagets Theory of Cognitive

development.

Piaget was an extremely smart man, both a biologist and a


psychologist he was well educated and logical. At the age
of 10 he published his first scientific paper regarding bird
spotting and then at the age of 15 he was offered a job to
work in a museum.

In this stage (0 2 years old) there begins to emerge


some recognition as well as use of memory and thought.
For maximum development in this stage a stimulating
environment is needed so that the subject can begin to
make associations and learn basic coordination and motor
skills. In this stage object permanence is usually present.

In this stage (2 7 years old) subjects are beginning to be


able to associate symbols with their meaning. Reading and
writing skills are also beginning to develop. Subjects are
usually quite egocentric thinking only of them selves with
difficulty putting themselves in someone elses
perspective. Shown with the cups and water, perception
mass and velocity skills are still not fully developed.

In this stage (7 12 years old) Perception, mass and


velocity skills begin to reach full development. Subjects
can become quite fixated on rules and procedures. Can
focus on more than one area in problem solving.

In this stage (12 Adult) subjects are able to perform


abstract, hypothetical and deductive reasoning
