Discussion:

For this experiment, we were tasked with finding the time of setting of hydraulic
cement. In our experiment, it is a type 1p Portland cement from Eagle cement. In
this experiment, we used the data we have gathered from our second experiment
and in our first experiment where we took our data for the normal consistency. In
this experiment, we used a Gilmore apparatus to check if we have already achieved
the initial settings. We did not test for the final settings because of time constraints.
This test is done so that it would be possible to avoid large expenditures on
formwork because we would be able to find the value of the final setting time.
For us to get the time of initial setting of the cement we first gathered a 500-gram
sample passing sieve 50. We then used our data from the previous experiment to
get the right volume of water which will be at normal consistency. We then formed it
into a cement ball then divided into 4 parts. After dividing it into 4 parts, we placed
the 4 sample into different glass plates. The cement paste pat should have a base
diameter of about 3 inches, top diameter of around 2 inches, and a center thickness
of around 0.5 inch. We then waited for the cement paste pat to get to the initial
settings which takes place around 1 hour to 3 hours. We tested the cement paste
pat using the small Gilmore needle, with a weight of 0.250 lb., if it already achieved
the initial setting. We tested for all four samples.
Conclusion:
For this experiment, we were tasked with recording the time of the cement to
initially set. We used the type 1p Portland cement from Eagle cement as our
sample. The objective of this experiment is to get time of the initial set of the
cement. We were able to achieve the average initial set using the 4 sample we have
prepared and tested. For our group, it is 2 hours, 40 minutes, and 43 seconds for
the cement to achieve initial setting.

institution as well as the professor for guiding us in this experiment.
