Summary of the Event (at least 3 major points; each point will have its own paragraph)
A. There has been news circulating that there are camps in which gay men are being held
in Chechnya which is located in Russia. Although they could not reach Chechen
authorities, they did receive a comment from the regions president in which he stated
that gay men did not exist there. As a result, many people in London have gathered to
protest this in front of the Russian embassy.
B. The reasoning behind the protest, explained by the protests organizer and a campaigner
for LGBT rights, is to stand up for those who arent given the same rights elsewhere. The
kind of protest which was there had never been done in Russia. As a way to help, there
has also been a hotline set up by the Russian LGBT in which victims of abuses may call
and give their testimonies; there has been about 40 so far. Not to mention, there is also
the same organization is setting up an evacuation for those who have been targeted.
C. It is extremely difficult in Russia to have another sexuality than the traditional one
because of the large number of conservative Muslims who are present. It is not only
strangers who commit these abuses towards LGBT people, it is even their own families.
Even a spokesman for Chechen leader Kadyrov said hinted that the relatives would have
killed them themselves.
Your Opinion of the Event (at least 3 sentences).
Personally, Im rather disappointed in the fact that people in Russia are bringing back
these sort of concentration camps even after being aware of the aftermath of it. I do
respect the LGBT community and others who protested for the rights of those who are in
another country. It shows that they arent for only wanting rights for themselves and in
where they live, but they are for rights everywhere, no matter what country,
Relate your Event to a Historical Event (compare and contrast with current event).
This event can be compared to when Jewish people were put into concentration camps
during World War II. It is different because instead of Jewish people it is gay men and
instead of it taking place in Germany, its in Russia. They are similar because both people
are being held captive and are being abuse, tortured, killed, etc.
