Tim Kreider is an essayist and cartoonist. His most recent book is We Learn Nothing (Simon &
Schuster). He has contributed to The New York Times, The New Yorkers Page-Turner blog, al
Jazeera, the Mens Journal, nerve.com, The Comics Journal, and Film Quarterly. His cartoons have
been collected in three books by Fantagraphics. His cartoon, The PainWhen Will It End? ran
for twelve years in the Baltimore City Paper and other alternative weeklies, and is archived at the
paincomics.com. Tim was born and educated in Baltimore, MD. He lives in New York City and an
Undisclosed Location on the Chesapeake Bay. He had the same cat for nineteen years.

GARY MENDELL | CHAIRMAN OF HEI HOTELS & RESORTS

Mendell is the founder and CEO of Shatterproof. Mendell founded Shatterproof to spare others the
tragedy his family suffered with the death of his son Brian, who lost his battle with addiction in 2011.
Mendell is the founder and former CEO of HEI Hotels & Resorts and the former president of Starwood
Lodging Trust. A Cornell (79) and Wharton grad, Mendell went on to co-founded HEIs predecessor
in 1985, which became one of the fastest-growing hotel investment firms in the United States. In 1997,
HEI sold a majority of its hotels to Starwood Lodging and Trust where Gary was named president
and elected to the Starwood Board of Trustees. Gary resigned from his position in 1998 to pursue
entrepreneurial activities and has since raised two discretionary private equity funds with some of
the nations university endowments, a $275 million fund in 2004 and a $425 million fund in 2006.

ADAM ROBINSON | GLOBAL STRATEGIST, ADVISOR


He is the co-founder of The Princeton Review. He currently works as a global macro advisor to
the heads of some of the worlds largest hedge funds[2] through his company Robinson Global
Strategies. Robinson co-authored Cracking the SAT with John Katzman, the only test preparation
book ever to become a New York Times best seller. His other books, which include Cracking the
LSAT, What Smart Students Know, and The RocketReview Revolution, have received high acclaim
from students and educators.

JEFF SPECK | URBANIST


Jeff Speck is a city planner and urban designer who, through writing, lectures, and built work,
advocates internationally for more walkable cities. As Director of Design at the National Endowment
for the Arts from 2003 through 2007, he oversaw the Mayors Institute on City Design and created
the Governors Institute on Community Design. Prior to this, he spent ten years as Director of Town
Planning at Duany Plater-Zyberk and Co., where he led or managed more than forty of the firms
projects. He is the co-author of Suburban Nation: The Rise of Sprawl and the Decline of the American
Dream as well as The Smart Growth Manual. His recent book, Walkable City: How Downtown Can
ave America, One Step at a Time was called timely and important, a delightful, insightful, irreverent
work and was the best-selling planning/design title of 2013 - 2015.

IGOR VAN GEMERT | FOUNDER & CEO, SIM-CI


Four years ago he started to raise awareness on cyber security within his company Alliander and
predicted how the growing complexity of critical infrastructures correlates with their resilience.
He is responsible for boosting innovation at Liandon Energy Consultancy Group, the engineering
department of Alliander and is advisor to the European Commission on cyber security legislation
within the critical infrastructure domain. SIM-CI uses proprietary AI technology to teach the world
how to build resilient cities with smarter city design.
