2017. In this source, the author Agata Blaszczak-Box details how many people turn to

consumption to combat negative feelings. But, an increase in consumption also created a

vicious cycle the more a person buys and lonelier they feel and the lonelier they feel, the

more they buy. This article was published in Psychology Today, a mainstream psychology

magazine, so it is fact-checked and accurate. I will use this source to show the negative

effects of consumption on Jack in White Noise. The information explains why Jack is

lonely and depressed.

American popular culture. He details how the general population became very afraid of

nuclear attacks and nuclear weapons. This lead to a negative view of atomic energy and

creation of bomb shelters. Hixson also writes about the increase in religion in American

society due to the belief that Communist were a threat to Christianity. This is a reliable

source. It is from the Gale reference source, which is known for their painstaking

measures to verify their data. I will use this source to explain the expression traditional

values that manifested themselves in White Noise.

May 2017. This source details the important events and defining characteristics of
1980s, one of which was consumerism. While consumerism had its advantages, many

Americans began to disagree with the concept and principles of consumerism. This

source, which was compiled by Gale, is accurate due to the extent the company goes to

fact check everything. I will use this source to explain the consumerist culture that was

developing when the novel was taking place. This will give background to my argument

that Americans held a negative view about consumerism, giving background to my

argument.
