OPERATION
Followingareparagraphsthatbrieflydescribetheoperationofeachofthemajorexteriorlightingsystems.Thelamps
andthehardwiredcircuitsbetweencomponentsrelatedtotheexteriorlightingsystemmaybediagnosedusing
conventionaldiagnostictoolsandprocedures.Refertotheappropriatewiringinformation.Thewiringinformationincludes
wiringdiagrams,properwireandconnectorrepairprocedures,detailsofwireharnessroutingandretention,connector
pinoutinformationandlocationviewsforthevariouswireharnessconnectors,splicesandgrounds.

However,conventionaldiagnosticmethodswillnotproveconclusiveinthediagnosisoftheexteriorlightingsystemor
theelectroniccontrolsorcommunicationbetweenmodulesandotherdevicesthatprovidesomefeaturesoftheexterior
lightingsystem.Themostreliable,efficient,andaccuratemeanstodiagnosetheexteriorlightingsystemorthe
electroniccontrolsandcommunicationrelatedtoexteriorlightingsystemoperationrequirestheuseofadiagnosticscan
tool.Refertotheappropriatediagnosticinformation.

BACKUPLAMPS
Thebackup(orreverse)lampshaveapathtogroundatalltimesthroughatakeoutandeyeletterminaloftheheadlamp
anddashwireharnessthatissecuredbyagroundscrewtotheinnerfendersupportwithintheenginecompartment.On
vehicleswithamanualtransmission,thebackuplampswitchprovidesaninputtotheTotallyIntegratedPowerModule
(TIPM)andtheTIPMprovidesbatteryvoltagetothebackuplampsonthebackuplampfeedcircuitwhenevertheignition
switchisintheONpositionandtheREVERSEpositionisselectedwiththetransmissionshiftlinkage.

Onvehicleswithanautomatictransmission,thePowertrainControlModule(PCM)continuallymonitorsahardwired
multiplexinputfromtheTransmissionRangeSensor(TRS),thensendstheproperelectronictransmissiongear
selectorstatusmessagestootherelectronicmodulesovertheControllerAreaNetwork(CAN)databus.Wheneverthe
ignitionswitchisintheONpositionandtheTIPMreceivesanelectronicmessageindicatingthestatusofthe
transmissiongearselectorisREVERSE,itprovidesabatteryvoltageoutputtothebackuplampsonthebackuplamp
feedcircuit.

BRAKELAMPS
Thebrake(orstop)lampseachhaveapathtogroundatalltimesthroughatakeoutandeyeletterminaloftheheadlamp
anddashwireharnessthatissecuredbyagroundscrewtotheleftinnerfendersupportwithintheenginecompartment.
TheCenterHighMountedStopLamp(CHMSL)hasapathtogroundatalltimesthroughatakeoutandeyeletterminalof
theinstrumentpanelwireharnessthatissecuredbyagroundscrewtothebackofthesupportstructureofthe
instrumentpanelnearthecenter.ThebrakelampsandCHMSLreceivebatteryvoltageonthebrakelampswitchfeed
circuitwhenthebrakelampswitchisclosedbythebrakepedalarm.TheCHMSLandbrakelampsareconnectedtoa
hardwiredoutputfromthebrakelampswitch.Thebrakelampfunctionofthetrailertowwiringiscontrolledbyanoutput
fromtheTIPMbaseduponahardwiredinputfromthebrakelampswitch.

DAYTIMERUNNINGLAMPS
VehiclesmanufacturedforsaleinCanadailluminatethehighbeamfilamentofbothheadlampbulbsatareduced
intensitywhentheengineisrunning,theparkingbrakeisreleasedandtheexteriorlampsareturnedOFF.TheTIPM
mustbeprogrammedappropriatelyforthisfeaturetobeenabled.Onceenabled,anytimetheTIPMreceiveselectronic
messagesovertheCANdatabusfromthePCMindicatingtheengineisrunningandfromtheEMICindicatingthe
statusoftheheadlampswitchexteriorlightinginputisOFFandthattheparkingbrakeisreleased,theTIPMprovidesa
pulsewidthmodulatedvoltageoutputtotheproperheadlampbulbfilamentsthroughtherightandlefthighbeamfeed
circuitstoproduceilluminationatareducedintensity.

FRONTFOGLAMPS
Vehiclesequippedwithoptionalfrontfoglampsincludeafrontfoglampswitchintegraltotheheadlampswitchonthe
instrumentpanel.Thefrontfoglampshaveapathtogroundatalltimesthroughtheirconnectiontotheheadlampand
dashwireharness.Theheadlampanddashwireharnesshastakeoutswitheyeletterminalsthataresecuredbyground
screwstotheleftinnerfendersupportwithintheenginecompartment.TheEMICmonitorsahardwiredmultiplexinput

fromtheheadlampswitchtodeterminewhetherthefoglampsareselected,thensendselectronicfoglampswitch
statusmessagestotheTIPMovertheCANdatabus.

WhentheTIPMreceivesafoglampswitchstatusmessageitthencontrolsfrontfoglampoperationbyprovidinga
batteryvoltageoutputtothefoglampsthroughthefoglampfeedcircuit.TheTIPMalsosendstheappropriateelectronic
messagebacktotheEMICtoilluminateorextinguishthefrontfoglampindicator.TheTIPMwillautomaticallyde
energizethefrontfoglampsanytimetheheadlamphighbeamsareselected.

TheTIPMalsoprovidesabatterysaver(loadshedding)featureforthefrontfoglamps,whichwillturntheselampsOFF
iftheyareleftONformorethanabouteightminuteswiththeignitionswitchintheLOCKposition,ifthereisacharging
systemfailure,oriftheelectricalsystemvoltagefallsbelowabout11.75voltsformorethanabout30seconds.

Eachfrontfoglampincludesanintegraladjustmentscrewtobeusedforstaticaimingofthefoglampbeams.

HAZARDWARNINGLAMPS
ThehazardwarningsystemincludestheEMIC,theTIPMandthemultifunctionswitchonthesteeringcolumn.The
EMICmonitorsahardwiredmultiplexinputfromthemultifunctionswitchtodeterminethestatusofthehazardwarning
switch,thensendstheappropriateelectronichazardswitchstatusmessagestotheTIPMovertheCANdatabus.The
TIPMrespondstothesemessagesbycontrollingabatteryvoltageoutputandtheflashrateforeachoftherightandleft
turnsignallamps.TheTIPMalsosendstheappropriateelectronicmessagesbacktotheEMICtocontrolthe
illuminationandflashrateoftherightandleftturnsignalindicators,aswellastocontroltheclickrateofan
electromechanicalrelaysolderedontotheEMICelectroniccircuitboardthatemulatesthesoundemittedbya
conventionalhazardwarningflasher.

HEADLAMPS
TheheadlampsystemincludestheEMIC,theTIPM,themultifunctionswitchonthesteeringcolumnandtheheadlamp
switchontheinstrumentpanel.Theheadlampbulbshaveapathtogroundatalltimesthroughtheirconnectiontothe
headlampanddashwireharness.Theheadlampanddashwireharnesshastakeoutswitheyeletterminalsthatare
securedbygroundscrewstotheright(rightheadlampbulb)andleft(leftheadlampbulb)innerfendersupportwithinthe
enginecompartment.

TheEMICmonitorsahardwiredmultiplexinputtodeterminethestatusoftheheadlampswitch,andahardwired
multiplexinputfromthemultifunctionswitchtodeterminewhetherthehighorlowbeamsareselected.TheEMICthen
sendstheappropriateelectronicheadlampswitchandheadlampbeamselectswitchstatusmessagestotheTIPM
overtheCANdatabus.TheTIPMrespondstothesemessagesbyprovidingapulsewidthmodulatedvoltageoutputto
theproperheadlampbulbthroughtherightandleftlowandhighbeamfeedcircuitstoilluminatetheselectedheadlamp
filaments.Whentheopticalhornfeatureisselected,thelowbeamswillshutOFFabout200millisecondsafterthehigh
beamsareactivated.

TheTIPMalsorememberswhichbeams(loworhigh)wereselectedwhentheheadlampswerelastturnedOFF,and
energizesthosebeamsagainthenexttimetheheadlampsareturnedON.TheTIPMprovidesabatterysaver(load
shedding)featurefortheheadlamps,whichwillturntheselampsOFFiftheyareleftONformorethanabouteight
minuteswiththeignitionswitchintheLOCKposition.TheEMICprovidesafailsafefeaturefortheheadlamps,which
willsendanelectronicmessagetotheTIPMtoturnthelowbeamheadlampsONautomaticallyifitdetectsnoinput
fromtheheadlampswitch.TheTIPMalsoprovidesafailsafefeaturefortheheadlampsthatwillturntheheadlampsON
automaticallywheneveralossofCANbuscommunicationisdetectedwiththeignitionswitchintheONposition.

Eachheadlampincludesanintegralreflectoradjustmentscrewtobeusedforstaticaimingoftheheadlamps.

PARKLAMPS
TheparklampssystemincludestheEMIC,theTIPMandtheheadlampswitchontheinstrumentpanel.Thefrontpark
lampandsidemarkerlampbulbseachhaveapathtogroundatalltimesthroughtheirconnectiontotheheadlampand
dashwireharness.Theheadlampanddashwireharnesshastakeoutswitheyeletterminalsthataresecuredbyground
screwstotheright(rightparklampandsidemarkerlampbulbs)andleft(leftparklampandsidemarkerlampbulbs)
innerfendersupportwithintheenginecompartment.Therearparklamp,sidemarkerlamp,licenseplatelampandthe
optionalfenderandtailgatemarkerlampbulbshaveapathtogroundatalltimesthroughatakeoutandeyeletterminalof
theheadlampanddashwireharnessthatissecuredbyagroundscrewtotheleftinnerfendersupportwithintheengine
compartment.Theoptionalcabclearancelampseachhaveapathtogroundatalltimesthroughatakeoutandeyelet

terminaloftheinstrumentpanelwireharnessthatissecuredbyagroundscrewtothebackofthesupportstructureof

TheEMICmonitorsahardwiredmultiplexinputfromtheheadlampswitch,thensendstheappropriate
electronicheadlampswitchstatusmessagestotheTIPMovertheCANdatabus.TheTIPMrespondstothese
messagesbyprovidingabatteryvoltageoutputtotheappropriatelampbulbsthroughtherightandleftparklampsfeed
circuits.

TheTIPMprovidesabatterysaver(loadshedding)featurefortheparklamps,whichwillturntheselampsOFFifthey
areleftONformorethanabouteightminuteswiththeignitionswitchintheLOCKposition.TheEMICprovidesafail
safefeaturefortheparklamps,whichwillsendanelectronicmessagetotheTIPMtoturntheselampsON
automaticallyifitdetectsnoinputfromtheheadlampswitch.TheTIPMalsoprovidesafailsafefeatureforthepark
lampsthatwillturntheheadlampsandparklampsONautomaticallywheneveralossofCANbuscommunicationis
detectedwiththeignitionswitchintheONposition.

TRAILERTOWWIRING
Inadditiontothetrailertowwiringprovisions,theTIPMinallvehiclesincludesdedicatedtrailertowbattery,trailertow
parklamp,andbothrightandlefttrailertowstop/turnfeedoutputcircuits.WhentheTIPMreceivestheappropriate
inputsfornormalpark,turnsignal,hazardwarningorbrakelampoperation,itrespondsbyprovidingbatteryvoltage
throughtheappropriatetrailertowwiringfeedcircuitstosynchronizetheilluminationandflashrateofthetrailerpark,
brakeandturnsignallampswiththoseofthetowvehicle.

TURNSIGNALLAMPS
TheturnsignallampssystemincludestheEMIC,theTIPMandthemultifunctionswitchonthesteeringcolumn.The
frontturnsignallampbulbseachhaveapathtogroundatalltimesthroughtheirconnectiontotheheadlampanddash
wireharness.Theheadlampanddashwireharnesshastakeoutswitheyeletterminalsthataresecuredbyground
screwstotheright(rightfrontturnsignallampbulb)andleft(leftfrontturnsignallampbulb)innerfendersupportswithin
theenginecompartment.Therearturnsignallampbulbshaveapathtogroundatalltimesthroughatakeoutandeyelet
terminaloftheheadlampanddashwireharnessthatissecuredbyagroundscrewtotheleftinnerfendersupportwithin
theenginecompartment.

TheEMICmonitorsahardwiredmultiplexinputfromthemultifunctionswitchtodeterminethestatusoftheturnsignal
switch,thensendstheappropriateelectronicturnsignalswitchstatusmessagestotheTIPMovertheCANdatabus.
TheTIPMrespondstothesemessagesbycontrollingabatteryvoltageoutputandtheflashrateforeithertherightorleft
turnsignallamps.TheTIPMalsosendstheappropriateelectronicmessagesbacktotheEMICtocontrolthe
illuminationandflashrateoftherightorleftturnsignalindicators,aswellastocontroltheclickrateofan
electromechanicalrelaysolderedontotheEMICelectroniccircuitboardthatemulatesthesoundemittedbya
conventionalturnsignalflasher.

TheEMICalsoprovidesaturnsignalONwarningthatwillgeneraterepetitivechimestoindicatethataturnsignalhas
beenactivecontinuouslyfor1.6kilometers(1mile)withthevehiclespeedgreaterthan22kilometersperhour(15miles
perhour).VehiclesbuiltformarketsotherthantheUnitedStatesandCanadahaveareviseddistancethresholdof4
kilometers(2.49miles)forthisfeature.Thechimewillcontinueuntiltheturnsignalinputbecomesinactiveoruntilthe
vehiclespeedmessageindicatesthatthespeedislessthan22kilometersperhour(15milesperhour),whichever
occursfirst.
