1. The province of Utrecht

The province of Utrecht has 26 municipalities in 2015 (figure 1.1). The thematic maps in this assignment are based on an overall theme, which is
in this case: health. For each of these thematic maps the boundaries of the municipalities of Utrecht were used and obtained from the CBS
(Central Bureau Statistics). These boundaries come from the Wijk- en buurtkaart which is a map based on the BRK (Basis Registratie Kadaster)
for on municipality boundaries or on the Bestand Bodemgebruik of the CBS for neighborhood boundaries (CBS, 2012b; CBS, 2013b; CBS, 2015).

2. Choropleth map

A choropleth map was created of the percentage smokers (figure 2.1) and the percentage severe smokers (figure 2.2) per municipality in the
province of Utrecht. Smokers are considered as persons above 19 years old in the population that have answered yes on the question: Do you
sometimes smoke?. Severe smokers are considered as persons above 19 years old in the population that daily smoke 20 cigarettes or more a
day. For the percentages of smokers and severe smokers the Gezondheidsmonitor was consulted (CBS, 2012). Table 2.1 shows the percentages
of smokers and severe smokers per municipality in the province of Utrecht in 2012.

For both choropleth maps (figure 2.1; figure 2.2) the equal interval classification method was selected. The equal interval is best applied for
familiar data ranges, such as percentages and has the advantage of being easily calculated. Since the data used for these maps are percentages of
smokers and severe smokers, this method fits well. The equal interval method is determined by dividing the range of the data by the number of
classes. It divides attribute values into equal size ranges, which makes them also suited for comparison. The number of records that fall into each
class differs and can be seen in figure 2.3. The number of classes was decided by using the formula n= log N / log 2 (N= 26, the number of
observations). The number of classes was therefore set to 4 and furthermore defined by making sure that all values were incorporated in the
classes. Moreover, it was important that the classes did no overlap, nor that they were empty. The accuracy of class limits was set to two
decimals.

Figure 2.3: Equal interval classifications for the creation of the choropleth maps

While deciding the best classification method, the distribution of the data set was analyzed. The data was arrayed and ordered from high to low
values. As can be seen in figure 2.4, the data set is characterized by a straight line. For this reason, the classification method of equal intervals
was chosen.

3. Proportional diagram map

A proportional diagram map was created of the number of persons provided with medicines per municipality in the province of Utrecht in 2013
(figure 3.1). For the data, the health and well-being data set of the CBS (Central Bureau Statistics) was consulted. Table 3.1 shows the absolute
numbers and percentage of persons provided with medicines in each municipality in the province of Utrecht in 2013 (CBS, 2013).

A cartogram map was created representing the number of persons with severe overweight in each municipality of the province of Utrecht in
2012 (figure 4.1).

The absolute numbers of persons with severe overweight were used as attribute data (table 4.2). The aim was to visualize the distribution of
absolute data extending over the municipality areas. The cartogram illustrates the persons with severe overweight by scaling the area of each
municipality in proportion to the population. Therefore, according to Jacques Bertins visual variables, size is an important visual variable used
in this cartogram map.
