Part A errors and corrections: The error I made in part A was an incorrect formula.

10
Originally, I used A= x 1 10 dx ; however, I should have been using the formula
1
10
A= x 1dx because the equation for finding the area underneath a curve as I have
1
b
been requested to do by the problem is top f unction bottom f unction dx , but I made a
a
careless error and added a minus 10 onto the end of my equation being thrown off by
the fact that my graph was bounded by the vertical line x=10 and lowered my original
equations position by 10 units. I also did not actually give the area of the formula, I
simply presented the formula for the area. To find the area, the simplest way to solve
the problem would be to use a graphing calculator and enter your equation into math 9,
but for the sake of doing the problem by hand, I will use U-substitution. For this
particular part of the problem U = x 1 and the Derivative of U, or DU, is equivalent to
b
DX, DU=DX; therefore, after U substitution my equation is A = u1/2 du . Keep in mind
a
that a variable raised to the is the equivalent of taking the square root of that variable.
b
After this U substitution, I now must integrate A = u1/2 du , which will equal
a
3/2 b
A=[ ] . To solve this, I must replace U with what I originally
2u
3 ]a
substituted it with, then plug the values of B and A where shown in the
2(x1)3/2 10
following formula. A = F (B) F (A) , so A = 3 ]1 . The formula will
3/2 3/2
2(101) 2(11)
then become A = 3 3 = (2 * 27)/3 = 2(9) = 18. So the area of R
is 18.
