One Southern Leyteo born in an hour

Every one hour, one Southern Leyteo baby is born. In its press release on the data
on vital statistics in year 2016 presented by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA),
a total of 9,406 live births were registered in Southern Leyte, which translated to an
average of 26 babies born every day. The number of males (4,855) outnumbered
the number of females (4,551) that resulted to a sex ratio of 107 males per 100
males.

According to statistics, most births were registered in Maasin City at 32.5% (3,053).
This was followed by Sogod with 2,027 registered births and Anahawan with 636 or
6.8%.

The ranking can be attributed to the presence of hospitals in these municipalities

where most of the births occurred, PSA claimed.

On the other hand, Limasawa posted the lowest registered births of only 23 (0.2%)
of the total.

Meanwhile, almost half of the total registered births in 2016 were born to unwed
mothers. This means that five out of ten babies were born wedlock.

The three city or municipalities that recorded the highest number of illegitimate
children were Maasin City, Sogod and Anahawan, respectively, while Libagon has
the highest number of percentage of legitimate children, tracked by the towns of
Malitbog and Macrohon.

Moreover, thirteen percent or a total of 1,233 registered births were delivered by

young mothers aged below 18 years old.

It was reported that the month of May is the favourite month for marriage. Most
couples get married in May with 294 and a daily average of 10 registered
marriages.

Riding on the fiesta occasion may be one of the factors that influenced the choice
of couples to marry during this month the press release statement read.
