Leyte gets biggest share of DPWH 2021 budget for entire Region 8

MAASIN CITY – The Department of Public Works and Highways – Southern Leyte District
Engineering Office (DPWH-SLDEO) has received a huge allocation for outlays earmarked for
the year 2021.

At the press briefing at the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) office on Tuesday, District
Engineer Ma. Margarita Junia said they have been granted a total of P3.85 billion budget for this
year – the highest allocation among the 13 district engineering offices in Eastern Visayas.

It was learned that the 2021 SLDEO’s budget is about 40 percent higher than its 2020 allocation
amounted to P2.3 billion.

Under its Regular Infrastructure Program, SLDEO has implemented a total of 135 projects for
last year, of which 82 of them were already completed, while the rest are still on-going.

According to Asst. District Engr. Allan Eway, of the 2020 budget, P713.67 million goes to the
rehabilitation and improvement of about 27 kilometer primary and secondary roads; 132.23
million for slope protection projects; P149.59 million for rehabilitation and strengthening of 5
permanent bridges; P168.68 million for construction of roads leading to economic zones, P14.72
for roads leading to tourist destinations; and 733 million for other infrastructure projects
including the construction of 90 local roads, 58 multi-purpose facilities, 4 bridges, 1
embankment project and installation of road safety devices.

Moreover, as the government’s implementing agency for infrastructure projects, DPWH So.
Leyte has accomplished non-infrastructure agencies and special projects such as: 21 rainwater
collector system amounting to P4.38 million; farm to market roads in the amount of 44 million
funded by the Department of Agriculture; 8 academic classrooms for secondary and senior high
school in the amount of P30 million under DEPED’s Basic Education Facilities Fund (BEFF);
disaster-related infra worth P15 million and special projects with an allocation of 11 million
under the DPWH Contingency Fund.
