Doctor Shenggen Fan, director general of the International Food Policy Research

Institute (IFPRI) is going to speak at the third annual D.C. Food Tank Summit. This summit is
going to be hosted in Washington D.C.. Doctor Fan is known for his work on transition
economies and agricultural development in China and India. Most of his epicurean research
focuses on the analysis of the role of public and private investments in agriculture to alleviate
poverty and hunger. Food Tank had a chance to speak with Dr. Fan about his ravenous work
towards feeding the [voracious] world.
Dr. Fan was inspired to work in this field because he grew up on a farm. He describes
how his family raised chickens and pigs and eked out rice and wheat on a plot about half the
size of a football field. Fan says how his family was able to feed themselves some years, but
most of the time they were on an abstemious diet. He knows what it feels like to be
malnourished and not being able to be have a healthy alimentary system. Dr. Fan knows it's
impossible to eliminate world hunger and how there is evidence to support this claim. An
example would be if China and Vietnam continue at their current rates of cutting hunger by
enabling small farmers to produce [delectable] foods and consumers to purchase these foods,
both countries can eradicate hunger and can cause for people to look emaciated.
Shenggen Fan biggest opportunity he sees to fix the food system, is that now there is
evidence-based research that shows that we can transform agriculture and our food system to
achieve multiple Sustainable Development Goals. Dr. Fan explains how we need to use this
information to improve [the glutton] of nutrition...and the welfare of women and children. He
shared a story about a food hero that inspired him. He says that millions of [culinary] farmers
are his food hero.
He also explains how instead of focusing on the palatable crop, we should work to
increase nutrition, improve resilience to shocks, and mitigate climate change. In order to do
this we need make a whole new food system. This new food system must be savory,
productive...efficient, nutrition- and health-driven, sustainable and climate-smart, inclusive, and
business-friendly. He gives advice to President Trump and the U.S. Congress on food and
agricultural. Dr. Fan says that it is important that the U.S. continue[s] to promote global food
security, resilience, and nutrition.
