TheHolyprophetsaidabouttheZakatthat:

Ihavebeencommandedtofightagainstpeopletilltheytestifythatthereisnogod
butAllah,andtheyestablishprayerandpayZakatandiftheydoit,thenbloodand
propertyareguaranteedprotectiononmybehalfandtheiraffairsrestwithAllah.
(Muslim)

IfanyMuslimrefusedtopayZakat,anIslamicgovernmentwasdutyboundtopunishhim.In
thetimesofCaliphAbuBakrsomeofthetribesrefusedtopaythepoordue.Hedeclaredwar
againstthem:

ByAllahIwouldfightdefinitelyagainsthimwhomakesadistinctionbetweenthe
prayerandZakat.(Muslim).
TheabovementionedquotationsfromtheQuranandtheHaditharesufficienttosignifythe
positionofthepoordueinIslam.TheymakeitabundantlyclearthattheedificeofIslam
cannotberaisedwithoutfullregardtothepoordue.Itwasactuallyforthis,thatthepoordue
wasincludedamongthepillarsoftheFaith.
ObjectivesOfZakat:

i)PurificationOfTheSoul:

Zakatrelatestoapersonsindividualcapacity.Thealmsgivercleanseshisheartfromgreed
andacquiresfearofAllah.Allahhassaid:

HeshallbesavedfromHellfirewhoisGodfearingandwhogivesrichestoothers
forthepurificationofthesoul.

InthisverseZakathasbeendescribedasameansofpurifyingthesoul.HolyProphethas
proclaimedtheLoveoftheworldistherootofalltheevils.Lovefortheworldmayhave
manyaspectsbutinessenceitisone.Emancipationoftheheartfromtemporalloveisnothing
butitspurification.Ifthepoordueyieldsthefreedomofthesoulitprovesthatithasquality
ofpurifyingthesoul.Freefromtheloveofworldlythings,onestrivestoseekthepleasureof
GodandthewelfareoftheAfterLife.Heinclinesmoretowardsthepiousdeeds.

ii)HelpOfThePoor:

Thesecondaryobjectiveofthepoordueisthehelpofthepoor.itprovidesnecessitiestothe
poorMuslims.TheHolyProphet(PBUH)said:

Verily,AllahhasordainedthepaymentofZakatonthem(Muslim).Itwillbetaken
fromtherichandreturnedtothepoor.(Muslim)

Itistruethattheprimaryobjectiveofthepoordueisthepurificationofthesoulbutitis
equallytruethatunlessitservestheneedsofthepoor,itsrealpurposewillremain
unattained.Thisdutycanbedonewhenthepoorduereachtheirhands.Thatisthereason
whytheQuranhasregardedthepoordueasarightofthepoorontheaffluentclassofthe
society.

iii)SupportOfIslam:

MuslimshavebeenrepeatedlyexhortedintheQurantothiseffect:

AndstrivewithyourwealthandyourliveinthewayofAllah.

Itisadmittedonallthehandsthattheprotectionandsupportofreligionisnotanordinary
matter.Assuchexpendingofpersonalwealthforthispurposehasgreatimportance.While
enjoiningHolyWartheQuransays:

SpendyourwealthinthecauseofAllahandbenotcastbyyourownhandsto
ruin.

Itsignifiesthatnonsupplyoffundsfortheprotectionandsupportofreligionistantamountto
invitingdestructionbothinthisworldandintheHereafter.Somethingthatoffersprotection
fromdestruction,bothinthisworldandtheAfterLife,canneverberegardedasamatterof
littleimportance.

ImportanceOfZakat:

ZakatisthebackboneofeconomicsystemofIslam.TheHolyQuranspeaksCharityasnext
tooprayerintheseriesofworshipsandsaysthatprayerswithoutcharityareuseless.

Woetotheprayerones,whoareunmindfuloftheirprayers,whomakeashowof
prayersandwithholdtheactsofCharity.

Zakathelpsinameliorationofconditionofthepoorandtoputinotherwordsmoreclearly
ZakatgiveseconomicsecuritytotheMuslimcommunityandpreventstheaccumulationof
wealthinafewhands.

ItisthedutyoftherichtopayZakatandrightofthepoortoreceiveZakat.Therichshall
maintainthepoorandtheneedysothattheymaynotbeg,stealorsleephungry.The
institutionofZakataimsatsolutionoftheproblemofdestructionofwealth.
HazratUmarbinAbdulAzizusedtosayprayercarriesuphalfwaytoGod,fasting
bringsustothedoorofHispalaceandalmsprocureusadmission.Thisisthe
importanceofZakat.

FastingisobligatoryuponeveryMuslimadult(baligh)whoisinpossessionofhissense(aaqil)
andwhoisfitphysically(Qadir).

ThemonthofRamzanhasbeenfixedforfastingthismonthbeingthemonthofrevelationof
theHolyQuran.ThewordRamzanhasbeenderivedfromRamzmeaningtoburn(to
burnselfishdesires).Therearealsomanyotherfastingsinadditiontofastingduring
Ramzan,buttheRamzanfastingisobligatoryandisofthehighestimportance.

SignificanceOfFasting:

Thesignificanceoffastingliesinthefactthatittrainsthemindsofmenandelevatestheir
moralaptitude.Itrestrainsthepassionsbutabstinenceandthusthefastachievecontrolover
hisphysiqueandmind.It(Fast)restrainsmanfrommeanandselfishdesiresaswellas
worldlythoughts.

FastingisprimarilyaspiritualdisciplineaimingatDivinenearness.TheFastersarespiritual
wayfarers.

WhoeverfastsduringRamzanhavingfaithinMeandseekingMypleasure.

Fastingisashield,sothefastershouldnotindulgeinfoulspeechandsurelythe
breathofafastingmanispleasantertoAllahthantheodourofmusk.(Holy
Prophet).

Finally,fastinginculcatesuniformity,inthistypesofinstitutionthroughouttheMuslimworld.
ThepoorandtherichbecomesameinstatusintheHolymonthofRamzan,atleastinthe
matterofmeal.

bringsmanclosertoGodandremovesallbarriersbetweenhimandhisLord.

maybeabletoattainnearnesstoGod.AfastingisobservedforGod.OnlyHeknowswhether
apersonisfastingornot,itbringsmanveryclosetohisCreator.
Fastingremindsonethroughoutthedaythatheisabstainingfromfood,drinkandother
pleasuresoflifeinobediencetothecommandofGod.Thereinnonetoseeandcheckwhether
heiseatingordrinkingorenjoyingotherpleasuresoflife.Heabstainsfromallthesethings
withthefullknowledgethatGodisalwayswithhimandalwaysseesandhearshimdoing
everything,andthatnothingcanbehiddenfromHim.Thusfastingdevelopsaverystrong
senseofnearnessandclosenesstoGodandofHispresenceeverywhere.

ii)PhysicalBenefits:

Fastingalsohasaphysicalusefulness.Duringthecourseoffastingoneimproveshealth.The
capacityofdigestiveorgansimproves.Thebetteristhegrowthofman.Whenthedigestive
organsgetrestduringfasting,theirpowerandstrengthformoreworkincreases.During
fastingonebearsthepangsofhungerandthirstandthushardenslifeforanydifficulttime.
Thepowerofresistanceincreasesandonecanfacehardshipssmilingly.

iii)Ethical/MoralBenefits.

Theethicalimportanceoffastingliesinthisfactthatonerefrainsnotonlyfromfoulactions
butalsofromfoulwords.Hadithrefers

Thefastingisshieldwhichsavesfromindulginginfoulwordsandfouldeeds.

IntheHolymonthofRamzan,theMuslimsgenerallyremainpureandtrytopastimeinpious
actions,piousthoughtsandinpiousassociation.HadithreferswhenthemonthofRamzan

putintochains.

theyhaveconqueredthelowerpassionswhichareaneasypreytothedevils.Themonthof
Ramadanissuitedforspiritualadvancement,forattainingnearnesstoGod.

I)SocialBenefits:

DuringthemonthofRamadan,allMuslimsrichandpoor,gatherinthemosquesatthetimeof
iftariandadditionaltarawihprayeratnight.Infact,itisatimeofgreatfestivitiesinthe
mosques.Theyfeel,experienceandseebrotherhoodinpracticeinthemosqueseveryday
duringthismonth.

FastinghasagreatsocialimpactwhenallMuslims,richandpoor,fromeverywalkoflife,fast
together.Theycometogetherinlargenumberforiftariandfortarawihprayersinthe
mosquesandsittogether.Ithelpstobringthemclosertoeachother,thrilledandfilledwith
sentimentsofloveandbrotherhood.

AttheendofRamadan,thereisthefestivalofEidalFitr,whentheMuslimsgathertogether
toofferatwoRakatEidPrayerasatokenofgratitudeandthanksgivingtotheirLordfor
havingsuccessfullycompletedthemonthoffasting.RamadanandthefestivalofEidwillnot
benefitMuslimsunlesstheyenablethepoormembersoftheMuslimscommunitytohave
enoughmoneytocelebratetheEid.TheHolyProphet(PBUH)haslaidgreatstressonthe
paymentofFitranabeforethecelebrationofEid.Heeventoldhisfollowersthatthenon
paymentofthispoorduewillrendertheirfastingnullandvoid.

Inshort,themonthofRamadanbringsgreateconomicbenefitsfortheMuslimcommunity
especiallyforthepoor.itbringstheBlessingsofGodintheformofwealthandfoodinthe
homesofthepoorpeople.

EconomicBenefits:

Amongotherbenefits,fastinghasenormouseconomicbenefitsfortheMuslimscommunity.
DuringthemonthofRamadan,therichpeoplespendverygenerouslyonthepoorpeopleto
winthepleasureofGod.TheirgenerosityandcharityenablethepoorsectionoftheMuslim
communitytoreceivesufficientfundsduringthismonthtomeettheirneedsforatleastapart
oftheyear.

Thenpeoplewho,owingtosicknessoroldage,cannotfast,areaskedtofeedthepoorin
compensation.Manyrichpeople,whoaresickortoooldtofast,lavishlyfeedthepoorpeople
duringthismonth.

Forthosewhocandoitbutwithhardship,isaransom,thefeedingoftheonethat
isinneedButhethatwillgivemore,ofhisownfreewill,itisbetterofhim.

Conclusion:

Thepurposeoffastingismanifold.AllahmentionedintheHolyQuran,thatthefastingis
prescribedforthebelieversasitwasprescribedforthepeoplebeforethem,sothattheymay
acquireselfcontrolandGodconsciousness.Therefore,thepurposeofthefastingistodevelop
Godconsciousness,selfcontrol,improvementofhealthbyreducingoreliminatingimpurities
fromthebody,andtobecomeawareoftheplightofthepoor,hungry,andthesick.Ramadan
isamonthofspiritualconsciousnessandhighsenseofsocialresponsibility.Thefulfilmentof
onesobligationsduringthemonthisrewardedby70times.

i)Prayerskeepthisobservationfreshinthemindsofindividualsthatamanisnotsovereign
butsubordinatetothecreatoroftheuniverse.
ii)Prayerdevelopsasenseofresponsibilityinman.
iii)Prayersarethemeansofdistinguishingbetweenthosewhohaveasenseofresponsibility
orwhohavenot.
iv)Itcreatesacompletesystemofthoughbywhichavirtuouscharacterisdeveloped.
v)Prayersdevelopapracticalsenseenablingapersontotakedecisiononacourseofaction
withfirmbelief.
vi)PrayersbringamannearertoGod.Thereisnobettermeansofachievingblissabout
whichithasbeensaid,

vii)Prayersarethemeansofpurifyingheartanddevelopingthesoul.

i)SocialOrganizationAndSocialDiscipline:

Prayersnotonlyhelpinbuildingindividualcharacterbutalsoinestablishingacommunity
structureandspirit.DailyPrayerskeeptheflameofthisspiritgoing.Thisiswhyprayerin
congregationismadeobligatory.Thegatheringofbelieversinmosquefivetimeisthebasisof
communityorganizationoftheMillatiIslamia.Prayerisdisciplinemorestrictthanhearmy
butwithoutanycoercion.ItisavoluntarydisciplineimposedtowinthepleasureofGod.

ii)MosqueAsCommunityCentre:

WhenMuslimsmeettogetherinmosqueforprayer,theyfeelandshareoneanothers
problemsandsufferings.Theygettheopportunitytoknowtheirbrethrenmorecloselyand
acquaintthemoftheirneedsandproblems.Thisfraternitypromotessincerity,brotherhood,
honesty,willingnesstohepandpietyamongstthem.

iii)MutualCooperationAndHelp:

Thisregularassemblyfordailyprayeralsoprovidesopportunitiesforcooperation.Peopleof
differentsocialandeconomicstatusmeetoneanotherinthemosqueandlearneachothers
problems.InIslamictradition,theywilllearnandcaterfortheneedsofthoseindifficultyand
suffering.

iv)EquityAndBrotherhood:

Prayersinthecongregationarethetraininginbrotherhood,equalityandfraternity.During
prayer,allMuslimsstandinprayertheirGodasequals.Thereisnodistinctionbetweenthe
richandthepoor,thewhiteandtheblack,theArabandthenonArab,theyallstandinrows
tooffertheirprayertoGod.
v)TraininginJihad(HolyWar):

Thereseemstobeacloserelationshipbetweenprayerandjihad.Anyarmymustpossess
disciplinetoachieveanymarkedbattlesuccess.Forwithoutdisciplinethearmyspiritwill
disintegrate.IslamoffersprayerasatrainingfordisciplineeveninHolyWar.

afterdeath,andjudgedbyAllahaccordingtoHisLaw,whichhasbeencontainedinHisHoly
Books.ThefortunatepersonsamongmankindandJinnwhosucceedonthatDay,willenter
Allahsparadise,whiletheunfortunateoneswillbethrownintoHell.

TheIslamicConceptOfHereafter:

BeliefinlifehereafteristhethirdbasicpostulateofIslam.TheworldaccordingtoIslam,isa
placeoftrialandmanisbeingjudgedinit.hewillhavetogiveaccountofallthathedoes
herein.Lifeonthisearthwill,oneday,cometoanend,andafterdeathanewworldwillbe
resurrected.Itwillbeinthislifeafterdeaththatmanwillberewardedorpunishedforhis
deedsandmisdeeds.ThosewholiveinthepresentworldalifeofobediencetotheLordwill
enjoyeternalblissinthehereafterwhilethosewhodisobeyHiscommandswillhavetogarner
thebitterfruitsoftheirdisobedience.

iv)Greatdistressintheworld
v)Risingofsuninthewest
vi)AmonsterwillemergefromMountSafa
vii)ComingofDajjal,whowillbeslainbyGodthroughthehandofJesus
viii)Asmokewillfillthewholeearth
ix)ThreeeclipseofMoon
x)ComingofAlMehdi.

AsregardsthefutureexistencetheHolyQuranspeaksinfollowingmanner,

Andthatwhichcomesafter(alAkhirat)iscertainlymuchbetterfortheethan
whichhasgonebefore.

ImportanceOfTheFaith:

Thisfaithisnotwithouteffectratherithasagreateffectinmouldinghumancharacter.It
awakensinmanthesenseofahigherlife,andthusmakeshislifemoreuseful.Themanwho
sincerelybelievesinfuturelifeshalltryhisbesttoleadhislifehonestlyinthisworld,sothat
hemayattainthehigherlifeinthenextworld.Thefaithinfuturelifeimpliesthatevery
action,however,secretlyitbedone,musthaveitsfruitandthereforethisbeliefservesboth
asaimpetustothegoodandnobledeedsandrestraintuponevils.Thisfaithleadsmantothe
rightpathandpreventshimfromevils.Thefaithinfutureexistenceawakensthesenseof
moralresponsibility,whiledisbeliefinitweakensthissense.Thus,thefaithinfuturelifeisa
greatmeansofestablishingpeaceandorderintheworld.

Secondly,thisfaithteachesuswiththathumanlifehasanaimandthisaimistoattaina
higherlifeafterdeath,whichcanbeachievedonlybygooddeedsandactionsdoneinthis
world.Lastly,thisfaithservesasagreatsourceofconsolationtothedisappointedand
distressedwhobelievethattheywillbeallowedtoattainthehigherlifeafterdeathwhichis
theaimofeveryhumanbeing.

AsregardsfuturetheHolyQuranspeaksinthefollowingterms

FearAllahandyeknowyehavetogotoAllah.Ifyedieyewillgeteternallife
(whiletobattleinthecauseofreligionandtruth).Whateveryegiveincharityye
willgetfullcompensationandyewillnotbetormented(inlifehereafter)

TheMuslimsmusthavefaithnotinProphetMohammad(PBUH)alonebutalsoinallother
prophetswhoappearedbeforeProphetMohammad(PBUH).Righteousnessisthisthatone
shouldhavefaithinAllahandtheLastDayandtheangels,thebooksandtheprophets.(Al
Quran).Alltheprophetsbelongtoonecommunityandtheywereallraisedforthesame
purposeandtheirteachingswereessentiallythesame.

Mohammadisthelastprophetandassuchthefinalmodelformankind.Tobelieveinhim
meanstoaccepthisauthorityasrepresentativeoftheSupremeLordandfollowhisexamplein
thoughtandbehaviour.BeliefinhiminvolvestheacceptanceofSharia,thePath,heconveyed
andimplementthatinallwalksoflife.ThusthewillofGodisfulfilledontheearth.

EveryMessengerwhowassentbyUswassentforthepurposethatheshouldbe
obeyedunderthesanctionofAllah.

theLawrevealedbyAllah.

Iamthelastmessenger,therewillbenomessengerafterme.

Therefore,aftertheadventofthelastProphet,themessageofIslamhascometoits
perfection.Therewillbenoprophetafterashewasthesealofprophets.

AbovestatedfactsprovethatFaithinthefinalityofprophethasgotfundamentalvalue.
TogetherwithfaithintheonenessofGod,itisimperativealsotohavefaiththatMuhammad
