RiverEast K-8 Staff Development Plan

RiverEast K-8 aims to teach students skills for success through academics, therapy, and relationships. The school faces challenges like absenteeism and high staff turnover. The principal's change project goals to shift staff mindsets from disagreeing to agreeing with John Hattie's eight mindframes for teachers. Staff will read Hattie's book, discuss it monthly, and complete pre- and post-surveys to assess changes in perspectives. Challenges may include other initiatives and crisis management, but embedding the work in PLC time and giving teacher voice and leadership aims to increase buy-in for developing a supportive school culture.

Change Project: Part 1
Goal: To shift staff mindsets from disagreeing to agreeing with the 8 mindframes
described in Hatties book, Visible Learning for Teachers.

How I will accomplish the goal:

- Prior to reading the text in PLC Teachers will fill out a survey about if they agree or disagree with
Hatties mindframes.
- Staff will read the book with their PLC and once a month I will check in to PLC to further develop
their understanding of Hatties work.
- After reading the book and attending the PLC development teachers will again take the survey
and I will use this data to determine if I have shifted mindframes during this process.
Why I chose this project?
- Before we can change our test scores (0% proficiency) and outcomes for
students we need to address the school climate and culture, as a staff we
need to grow and develop together to improve our ability to help our students
become successful, as our mission states.
- As a growing administrator, this project allows me to assess my ability to
develop staff and support their learning.
- I will use quantitative and qualitative data to assess my results by using a
survey, as well as, taking notes of the dialogue in the PLC.
Change Project Part 2: Process
1) PLC Survey - quantitative & qualitative (numbers & dialogue)
2) Modeling - how to summarize and create a discussion/activity
3) Schedule - On track
a) Reading Guide
b) Summary & Discussion/Activity Guide for each teacher on when they will present.
c) Monthly check in
Buy in/Feedback
- Providing the book and tying it to their TD&E work.
- Embedded the work in the PLC during the school day
- Teacher Voice - allowed space and directly stated that we want teachers to
come at this work with their authentic beliefs
- Multiple ways to get feedback - verbal/written
- Multiple voices leading the summaries and discussions - which will eventually
lead to building capacity for leading the Hattie work.
- Daily lesson check in - tying the work back to their classroom.
