16 November 2007

Dear Nadiah,
I just received your letter two days ago. It is good to know that you are in the pink
of health and I am sure everyone in the family is fine and well.
I just moved into my new house in Pasir Gudang. It is quite a busy town.My
house is not far from town. Uncle Hassan found this house through a friend of his.
My house is a single-storey terrace house. It has three spacious rooms and two
bathrooms. Aunt Mariam helped me to get all my needs. I bought a new television set.
Uncle Hassan gave me his old handphone. For my bedroom, Aunt Maznah bought me a
soft and comfortable pillow and an antique desk lamp. Our cousin,Roziah, who is Aunt
Maznahs daughter was kind enough to lend me her hair dryer as she knew that I have
long hair.
Nadiah,Im lucky enough because grandma ordered Grandpa to get me a new
toaster and blender. So,I have everything that I need for my kitchen.Grandma advised
me to keep the doors and the gates locked.. She doesnt want what happened to you
two months ago to reoccur. It was lucky for you that the robber only took your digital
camera.
Im thankful to have generous and helpful family members. I am happy in my new
house. Please tell Mum and Dad not to worry too much about me here. Im comfortable
in this new environment.
I have to pen-off now. Ill write to you again. Bye.

Your Sis,

Syazana.

TEXT B

Read the text.

Cheetahs are in trouble. Just about a hundred years ago, there were many
cheetahs in Asia. Today, they are almost extinct. They are declining in numbers.
Cheetahs rely on their sight to locate prey. Cheetahs hunt during the day to avoid
their prey from being stolen by nocturnal carnivores like lions, leopards and hyenas.
From a stationary position, cheetah needs only a few second to reach top speed. They
can sprint up to 112 km/hr. Therefore, they are the fastest animals on earth.
Despite their speed, cheetahs are not among the most formidable hunters in the
safari. Their hunts often fail because the cats tire easily. During a high speed chase,
their body temperature increases rapidly. They have to stop in less than a minute or
they can die of over heating.

Rabindranath Tagore

Rabindranath Tagore (1861 1941) was the fourteenth child of the fifteen

children of Debendranath Tagore. He grew to manhood in a highly cultural family

environment. He was educated at home and then he was sent to England for formal

schooling. He started writing verses from the time he was thirteen, and at twenty, he

published his first volume of Bengali poems. Year after year, his writing matured in

style. It also grew rich in content. Although Tagore was successful in all literary genres,

he was, first of all, a poet. Among his fifty odd volume of poetry are Masani (1890) [The

Ideal One], Sonar Tari (1894) [The Golden Boat], Gitimalaya 919100 [Wreath of Songs]

and many more.

After the death of his wife, Tagore published Gitanjali (Song Offering) in 1912.

A year later, he surprised India and the world when he won the Nobel prize in literature.

TEXT D

Read the passage below and copy it in your exercise book.

On 27 January 1756, in the beautiful town of Salzburg in Austria, a healthy

baby boy was born to Leopold Mozart and his wife Anna Maria. The couple had
every reason to be joyful by the birth of the baby. Of the six who had been born
to them so far, only a daughter, Nannerl had survived. All the others had died at
birth, or shortly after. At the babys christening a few weeks later, the proud
father named him Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
The Mozart children were exposed to music from a very young age. Almost
every evening, Leopold and his musician friends would practise for hours home.
During that time, both the children would sit quietly in the corner and listen
carefully as the various instruments were played. Therefore, they developed a
great love for music. In his short lifetime, Mozart composed 16 operas and 41
symphonies. He also composed many sonatas, quartets and countless piece of
church music. Many of his music pieces were only published many years after his
death.

Protected animals and animal parts seized

ROMPIN: The Wildlife Protection and National Parks Department seized wild
boar meat weighing 561kg, 168 pieces of monitor lizard skins, a python and
seven monitor lizards in separate raids at a shop here and a house in Endau,
Johor, recently.
The seized items, protected under the Wildlife Protection Act 1972, were
found in a steel drum and a refrigerator in front of the shop.
The monitor lizards were found in a blue sack at the back of the house.
State director Ady Ermanty Haniff Mohamad Hanif said the wild boar meat
costs between RM20 and RM50 per kg while the lizard skins cost between
RM10 and RM20 per kg.
Ady Ermanty Haniff said, following a public tip-off, six officers from the
wildlife enforcement unit led by legal and enforcement division deputy director
Celescoriano Razand raided the shop.
However, no arrests were made as the officers could not find anyone in
the shop or the house.
Ady Ermanty Haniff warned that possession of wild boar meat is an
offence under Section 68 of the Act, and if found guilty, the offender could be
punished with a fine of up to RM3,000 or a maximum three years jail or both.
He said under Section 87 of the Act, it is an offence to keep the seized
items without proper documentation.
Ady Ermanty Haniff said, for possessing five monitor lizards, an offence
under Section 64 (2)(A) of the Act, the offender is liable to a fine of not more
than RM3,000 or up to two years jail or both.
The offender could also be charged under Section 92 of the Act, and if
found guilty, would be fined not more than RM5,000 or sentenced to three years
jail or both.

Flash Flood

A flash flood will not let you know it is coming. You need to protect yourself by
tracking the weather and being alert to danger.
Keeping track of the weather forecast can help keep you safe. Check the
weather forecast before you go camping, playing or on a trip.
Flash floods occur when heavy rain fall in an area. When forecasters predict
storms, stay away from streams and drains. A storm upstream can send water rushing
down your way.
If the sky looks stormy, turn on the television or radio. You should listen for
weather alerts like the ones announced on our TV stations.

weather. They issue an advice when minor problems occur, like street flooding. A
warning is alerted when the storms cause larger, dangerous problems like flash floods..

Causes of illegal logging

Din : Do you know what had happened to Bukit Suci recently?

Nani : Bukit Suci, the water reserve? My father said the illegal logging has
disturbed the natural ecology and caused natural disasters.
Din : How does illegal logging cause natural disasters?
Nani : The roots of trees help to hold the soil together.. The trees
at Bukit Suci have been cut down. When it rains, the soil will not be
able to hold the pressure of the water and fall down causing landslide.
Din : I heard it can also cause flood? How?
Nani :The soil will go into the river and make it shallow. When it rains, the water in the
river will overflow and cause flood.

decrease and the earth will be warmer..
