Service Learning Component Essay

For my service learning component, I decided to continue at the elementary school I

attended for my field observation. The elementary school I attended was Marion Earl, the school

I attended kindergarten through fifth grade. The school has both evolved and remained just as I

remembered it from when I was a student. With new and improved teaching styles and the

implementation of technology in classrooms.

For my volunteering time, I was placed with the same teacher I did field observation

with, Mrs. Michelle Rom. As recommended, I made it a point to go beyond just simple passive

observation. I did my best to help students with any issue they had with their work such as

simple math or spelling inquiries. I also helped call out students names for a presentation project

in which they needed to stand in front of the class to present their turkey in disguise

assignment. I also helped Mrs. Rom out with simple tasks such as cutting out half page

assignments and stapling papers.

Throughout this field observation and volunteering experience I learned that more work

that meets the eye goes into being a teacher. To be a teacher, one must hold a great love and

passion for the children and their growth into their adult life. This experience has further

heightened my desire to become an elementary school teacher. Knowing that I am helping

children learn and grow is one of the greatest gifts I could ever have given to me and that is the

feeling I want to have forever. I want to be a teacher so I can see my students though their

elementary school years and see how much they've grown since they've started and know that I

was the start of their success.
