4. Language selection
When the default unit is switched on, a mask will appear to choose the language to be used. This mask will remain active for 30 seconds, after which the
application will automatically move to the main menu (M0 mask).
The language selected automatically is English, but it can be changed to one of the following: Italian, French, German.
To modify the language carry out the following operations:
1. Press the maintenance key if the external LCD terminal is being used, while if the built-in or external PGD terminals are used press the PRG key and
confirm the first item in the menu: MAINTENANCE, using the ENTER key;
2. The software presentation mask will appear, stating the code, version and date. Press ENTER to position the cursor on the last row;
3. Select the desired language using the UP or DOWN keys;
4. Press ENTER to confirm.
5. Initial switch-on
After checking the connections between the various boards and terminals, supply tension to the pCOOEM board(s). When the machine is switched on, the
software will automatically install the default factory values chosen by CAREL for all configuration parameters. This section explains how to reset the default
values and restore initial conditions. On the initial switch-on it is therefore not necessary to carry out this operation.
The procedure described below resets all configuration parameters to their original values chosen by CAREL.
WARNING! This procedure will irreversibly delete any programming input by the user.
Restoring factory values is an operation concerning each pCOOEM board. In the case of more than one board, this must be repeated for each board. The
procedure is identical for all boards. The procedures are as follows:
Press menu and prog keys on the LCD terminal at the same time (enter the builder branch with a PGD0 terminal). The LED over the menu key should
light up, as well as the one above prog;
Type in the password by using the arrow keys and press enter to access the manufacturer configuration branch:
+--------------------+

8. Masks
The masks are divided into categories:
USER masks that are not protected by a password: they can be found in all branches apart from PROG and MENU+PROG and show probe values,
alarm status, device functioning times, the time and date, and allow to set temperature and humidity set points and adjust the clock. They are
indicated by the W symbol in the successive parameters table.
USER masks that are protected by a password (1234, can be modified): access by pressing PROG. They allow to set main functions (times, set,
differentials) of connected devices; the masks that refer to functions that are not available are not visualised. They are indicated by the Xsymbol in
the successive parameters table.
ASSISTANCE masks that are protected by a password (1234, can be modified): access by pressing the MAINTENANCE KEY. They allow periodical
control of the devices, calibration of the connected probes, modification of functioning times and manual management of the devices. They are
indicated by the Ysymbol in the successive parameters table.
MANUFACTURER mask that are protected by a password (1234, can be modified): access by pressing the MENU+PROG keys. They allow
configuration of the shelter and enabling of the main functions and also the choice of the devices connected. They are indicated by the Zsymbol in
the successive parameters table.
The list of masks visualised on the display follows. The columns in the table represent the mask loops and the first mask (A0, B0) is that which appears by
pressing the corresponding key, the arrow keys can then be used to scroll the others. The codes (Ax, Bx, Cx) are visualised in the top right hand corner of the
mask, they can be easily identified in this way. The meaning of the symbols W, X is explained in the previous paragraph. The PSW symbol indicates the mask
for introduction of the password.

The heart of adjustment is a PID control which has a settable co-efficient for overheating.
Adjustment accessories are: LOW (Low overheating with integral time and adjustable threshold)
LOP (Low evaporation pressure, functioning only in transients, with integral time and
adjustable threshold)
MOP (High evaporation pressure, with integral time and adjustable threshold)
HiTcond (High condensation pressure, can be activated only with condensation pressure
probe read by pCO, with integral time and adjustable threshold)
The parameters table describes the adjustment parameters with the thresholds and the default values. The table below explains the meaning of the VALVE TYPE

The supply fan is always switched on when the unit is ON. It can be managed with ON/OFF output or with modulating output.
There are two alarms regarding the fan, circuit breaker and air low meter, which block the unit automatically placing it in the OFF status; both alarms are re-
armed manually.
The supply fan will be switched on, after a settable delay (default 10 seconds), on switch on of a shelter unit. It will remain active until the unit is switched off. It
is possible to set a fan switch-off delay time with respect to unit switch-off (default 20 s).
In the case of a black-out, the supply fan continues to function, to guarantee air circulation inside the technological environment. In this phase freecooling can
also modulate if suitable conditions are present.

Fan speed
Minimum speed (5.0 V)
Maximum speed (10.0 V)
It is possible to set minimum and maximum fan speed. Factory values are 5.0 V and 10.0 V.
Note that in dehumidification the speed is automatically reduced to the minimum value 5.0 V (50%), which can be modified if necessary.
In the case of a black-out the supply fan continues to function, going to 100% of its speed, in order to guarantee air circulation inside the technological
environment. In this phase freecooling can also modulate if suitable conditions are present.
The adjustment of condensation pressure is carried out on the basis of the condensation battery pressure and the status of the compressors. Activation takes
place by means of modulating outputs 010 V. Adjustment is based on the set point and the condensation differential as illustrated below.

Representation of modulating output:
It is possible to set the minimum and maximum speed of the condenser fan; whenever the minimum speed set is above 0 V, the fan can function at minimum
speed up to 1.0 bar below the condensation set point before switching off (see broken line part of the graphics above).
If the condensation probe is not enabled, the fan switch on is commanded by the compressor start up.
14. Compressor
The compressors are managed as simple ON/OFF loads (see TEMPERATURE ADJUSTMENT chapter). The maximum number of compressors is 1.
14.1 Times
For compressor safety the following times are envisioned:
minimum switch-on time;
minimum switch-off time;
minimum time between switch-on of the same compressor;
14.2.3 Interlock
The pCOOEM is provided with an electrical interlock between inputs dedicated to the general alarm and the delivery fan circuit breaker alarm, and for the physical
command exit of the unit itself.
15. Resistances
The resistances are managed as simple ON/OFF loads (see TEMPERATURE ADJUSTMENT chapter). The maximum number of resistances is 1.
16. Freecooling
In order to save energy it is possible to use air from the outside to cool rooms to be air conditioned. This is possible by means of a shutter that allows entry of air
from the outside, which is colder than the air in the environment.
It must be established if the air outside is cold enough with respect to the environmental temperature in order to carry out freecooling. The difference must be
lower than or equal to a certain value, defined offset freecooling. Modulation of freecooling takes place on the environmental temperature.
It is possible to decide if freecooling can function at the same time as the compressor or if it will function separately. If separate functioning of these devices is
selected, the freecooling shutter will close when the compressor starts-up.
The request for freecooling, decreases proportionally to the fall in temperature of the delivery air (see DELIVERY LIMIT) chapter.
If freecooling is not enabled, due to the causes indicated above, the shutter can maintain a minimum opening, which can be set by the user. Freecooling will
close completely only in the following phases:
shelter switched-off;
external temperature probe broken, not connected or not enabled;
environmental temperature probe broken or not connected;
fire/smoke alarm.
Freecooling is controlled by the modulating probe 010 V (See TEMPERATURE ADJUSTMENT chapter) or by the digital ON/OFF output.
In the case of a black-out, freecooling continues to function, maintaining, if possible, the introduction of air that is colder than the environment. During this phase
the normal freecooling offset is no longer considered (factory value 2.0 C) but a new offset of 1.0 C, which cannot be modified. In this phase the supply fan also
functions at 100% of its speed.
Even if the compressor/s cannot function due to alarms, the normal freecooling offset is not considered (factory value 2.0 C) but a new offset of 1.0 C which
cannot be modified.

If high environmental humidity is detected, freecooling will remain inhibited for a certain period of time, which can be set by the Manufacturer. When this period
of time has expired, if the level of humidity has fallen below the freecooling rehabilitation threshold, then the shutter can modulate normally. This function is
disabled during a black-out.
16.4 Re-alignment
As you may realise, control of the shutter using this system is not easily manageable by the programme, because there is no feedback indicating the degree of
opening precisely. The following solutions are used to solve this problem:
Every time temperature adjustment requests the opening or total closure of the shutter, the programme increases the opening or closure relay
activation time by 25% in order to assure complete closure/opening.
Every time the card switches on (ON) the shutter is closed totally for the running time, only afterwards can it start modulation on the basis of the
adjustment request.
18.2 Forcing
The unit in Present / Rotation mode and in stand-by are automatically activated when the units switched-on cannot satisfy the request for hot or cold. Therefore if
the temperature rises too much due to an excessive heat load for the units switched-on, after a certain period of time an amount of units in stand-by will be
activated, which are requested by the units switched-on. Every unit switched-on in this situation can request the activation of a unit in stand-by. The parameters
to be set for forcing are Differential, offset and delay, different for heating and cooling. The diagram below illustrates the function:

19. Alarms
The alarms managed by the programme can safeguard the integrity of the connected devices and give signals if the control parameters have moved away from
normal values or the board has an anomaly. The alarms can come from the digital alarm inputs, the probes and from the board. The effect of the alarms goes
from a simple signal to the blocking of one or more devices to switch-off (OFF) of the shelter. Many alarms are subject to settable delays.
When an alarm is triggered the following signals occur:
Switching on of the buzzer incorporated in the external terminal (absent on the built-in terminal and on the PGD external terminal);
Switching-on of the red LED underneath the ALARM key.
By pressing the ALARM the buzzer switches off and the alarm mask is visualised on the display. If there is more than one alarm active, once entering into the
alarm menu, just use the arrow keys to scroll through them all. If other keys are pressed the alarm mask will be exited but these remain memorised and re-
appear every time the ALARM key is pressed.
To manually re-arm the alarms and delete messages, be positioned on the alarm mask and press the ALARM key again; if the cause of the alarms have
disappeared (digital inputs re-armed or temperature back within the average etc) the masks disappear, the red LED switches off and NO ALARM ACTIVE
appears. If the cause of one or more alarms is still active, only the alarms whose cause is no longer present disappear, but the others remain visualised and the
buzzer and the red LED switch back on.
All alarms have manual reset; therefore in order to reset them an operator must intervene directly on the unit terminal.

The following data are memorised for each alarm relative to the shelter at the time in which the alarm occurred:
Alarm description;
time;
date;
chronological number of the event (0-100).
The chronological number of the alarm, in the top right-hand corner, indicates the age of the event with respect to the 100 memorisation places available. The
alarm with number 001 is the first that occurred after enabling of the BASIC historicals, therefore the oldest.
If the cursor is placed on the chronological number it is possible to scroll the history of the alarms by means of the arrow keys, from 1 to 100.
If we are in position 001, by pressing the downward arrow it is impossible to continue.
If, for example, 15 alarms have been memorised and we are in position 015, by pressing the upward arrow it is impossible to continue.
21. Supervision
It is possible to interface the unit with a supervision/remote assistance system, either local or long-distance. The pCOOEM can be provided with different
accessories, among which an optional board for serial communication through RS485 interface, not supplied with the pCOOEM board (for installation procedures
of optional serial communication boards, refer to the installation manual for the pCOOEM board).
The software can manage the following supervision protocols:
CAREL
Modbus
LonWorks (by using an optional board)
Trend (by using an optional board)
Bacnet (by external gateway or PCO-WEB)
If the serial communication values such as serial address and communication speed are correctly set, the parameters transmitted by the unit will be those in the
tables below. If the serial identification number is set to 0, the communication with the serial supervision system is disabled. Below is a list of the variables
managed by the supervisor.
For the syntax of sending an SMS message to the pCO* and for use of the table above, refer to the: GSM modem Protocol for pCO2 (cod.+030220330).
N.B. With GSM protocol active it is not possible to call from the remote supervisor towards the pCOOEM board.
22. Glossary
Proportional band: defines a temperature zone of a few degrees starting from the set point, inside which the system manages adjustment devices.
Buzzer: buzzer mounted on the external terminals; it makes a noise for long periods of time in the case of alarm or briefly if limits are exceeded on setting
parameters. The built-in terminals are not equipped with this device.
Default: this term defines values, for example the set point and the temperature proportional valve, automatically used by the system when modifications are not
carried out by the user.
Freecooling: action of introducing external air into the environment by means of a shutter opening, in order to cool the environment and saving energy at the
same time.
Step: defines an area of the proportional band (temperatures or humidity) inside which a device is switched-on and also defines the switch-on/off values of the
device in question.
Delivery: is the air introduced into the environment to be air conditioned.
Manual: switch-on and off of all devices connected to the board outputs, from a relevant mask and with the unit switched-off.
Mask: defines the screen that is visualised on the display.
Branch loop: series of masks regarding the same subject and therefore they can be easily reached by pressing the arrow keys; access to the branch takes place by
pressing one of the terminal keys, which visualises the first mask in the loop on the display.
Ramp: this term defines the excursion of a modulating valve from 0% to 100%.
Range: range of values available for a parameter.
Return suction: air of the controlled environment, sucked by the air conditioner.
Set point: defines a temperature value (or humidity) that must be satisfied; the system activates the hot or cold devices until the temperature or the humidity
have equalled the set point.
Sleep mode: defines the OFF status of a unit when requested by the Master unit, in the automatic Rotation mode
Buffer (memory): memory of the board on which the factory values of all parameters, selected by CAREL, are memorised. Permanent memory even without
voltage supply.
Upload: the operation with which the application programme is copied from the computer or from the programming key to the pCO board FLASH memory
3 point valve modulating valve: the 3 point valve is a commonly used valve. It is activated by 2 relays. One controls timed opening and the other timed closure.
The modulating valve is piloted by a live signal 0...10 V and is more precise.
Neutral zone: defines a very small temperature zone between the set point and the proportional band, inside which the devices do not switch on.
CAREL reserves the right to modify and change its products without forewarning. Manual valid for software version 1.1 and successive.
