Correlation of Shoulder

Impingement Syndrome
Sarah Mar
Agenda

Causes of the injury

Treatment(s)
Prevention(s)
Conclusion
Background Information

Tendons become irritated and inflamed as

they pass through the subacromial space
Pain occurs because of the tendons
rubbing on the shoulder blade.
Purpose

Inform competitive swimmers about the

harmful effects of this injury
Teach ways to prevent and/or heal this
injury
Causes of Shoulder Impingement Syndrome

Improper mechanics
Overuse
Underdeveloped muscles/tendons
Treatments

Medication (over the counter)

Rest from rigorous movements
Fixing stroke mechanics
Physical Therapy
More Radical Treatment

Arthroscopy Surgery
Removes inflamed tissue to relieve pressure on the
tendon
Not recommended for young athletes
Considered for older athletes
Prevention

Developing strong core muscles (abdominal

muscles)
Fixing stroke mechanics to correct form
Rest, Ice, minimal movements
Building muscle tone to increase strength and
stability
Conclusion

No significant difference in the muscle use while

conducting the motion of propulsion.
No significant difference in the muscle firing of the
teres minor in swimmers with normal and painful
shoulders
However, there is a correlation of potential causes
that can lead the injury to develop to become worse
