1. INTRODUCTION
It has been proposed for the Construction of Hangar and annex building at Andaman,
ECLAT has awarded the Detailed Analysis and Design work of the hanger annex
Building to OECPL, Chennai. This report deals with the analysis and design of pile

2. GEOMETRY
2.1. Steel portion
The length of the building is 30 m (c/c) and breadth of the building is 45 m (inner
dimension). This is a steel Hanger building with reinforced concrete pedestals. The
height up to the eaves level is 7.182 m. The spacing of columns is 7.50 m c/c.
The length of the building is 30 m (c/c) and breadth of the building is 6 m (c/c
dimension). The spacing of columns is 7.50 m c/c. The pedestal rests on pile cap. The
entire system rests on pile foundations.
3. MATERIAL
3.1. PEB Portion:
Grade of Steel,

4. LOADINGS
The following loads are taken into account as per IS: 875 part I and part II.
Wind load corresponding to basis wind speed of 44 m/s is considered as per IS : 875 Part III
height factor
0 - 10 1.03
height Vz
0 - 10 45.53
5. Load Combinations
1. Dead load + Live load
2. Dead load + Live load wind load

3. Dead load Wind load
4. Dead load + Live load seismic load
5. Dead load Seismic load
6. ANALYSIS
A detailed analysis of the building is done using finite element package program SAP
2000. The loads considered in the analysis are dead load, live load as per IS: 875 Part I
and II and wind load as per IS: 875 Part III. Seismic analysis is done as per IS: 1983-
2002. In the analysis, the beams and columns are modelled as frame elements. The
steel columns are assumed to be hinged at the top of the pedestals. The reactions from
the steel columns and pedestal are transferred to the pile cap as corresponding
loadings.
7. RESULTS
From the analysis the bending moment acting on pile caps, axial force and bending
moment acting on piles are obtained and the members are designed for the appropriate
forces.

8. DESIGN OF MEMBERS
8.1. Design of Pile:
Pu = 160 kN
Muy = 27 kNm.
Grade of concrete = M 30
= 4.8 m
Assuming leff = 2 l,
lex = 9.6 m
= 16 >12
Ma = (PuD/2000) (lex/D) 2
= 12.30 kNm.
= 275.3 kNm.
7
= 39.3 kNm.
= 4.74 kNm.
< 27 kNm.
(d / D) = 87.5 / 600
= 0.15
Referring to Chart 57 SP 16
8
Design for positive moment:
Assuming clear cover as 75 mm and also assuming 20 mm diameter bars are used
b = 600 + 150 + 150
= 900 mm
D = 1000 mm
d = 1000-75-10
= 915mm.
Mu = 580 kNm.
2
Mu/bd = 0.7
9
Vu = 248 kN.
c = 0.396
V/bd = 0.27 < 0.396
From the analysis the maximum forces that are transferred to the pedestal are
calculated and the pedestals are designed for the appropriate forces.
A typical design of Pedestal P1 is shown below:
Mx = 42.5 kNm
C = 256 kN
Pu / fck b D = 0.04
2
Mu / fck b D = 0.01 (Chart-44 SP-16)
p / fck = 0.01
p = 0.01 30 =0.3%
Minimum p = 0.8%
10
Ast required = 2700 mm2
Ast provided = 6-Y25+4-Y20+4-Y16 (5002 mm2)
