1. An air-filled a b (b<a<2b) rectangular waveguide is to be constructed to operate at 3 GHz in the

dominant mode. The desired operating frequency is chosen as at least 20% higher than the cut-off
frequency of the dominant mode and at least 20% below the cut-off frequency of the next higher-order
mode. Find the dimensions a and b of the waveguide.

2. For a rectangular waveguide operating at the TM11 mode, derive the expression for the surface current
densities on the conducting walls.

3. 3. A tunnel is modelled as an air-filled metallic rectangular waveguide with dimensions a = 8 m and b

= 16 m. Determine whether the tunnel will pass

(a) A 1.5 MHz AM broadcast signal.

(b) A 100 MHz FM broadcast signal.

4. In an air-filled rectangular waveguide, a TE mode operating at 6 GHz has

2 x y
E y = 5sin( ) cos( ) sin( t 12 z ) V/m
a b

Determine: (a) The mode of operation,

(b) Cut-off frequency of the mode calculated in part (a),
(c) Wave impedance.

5. An air-filled hollow 150 m long rectangular waveguide is caped at the end with a metal plate. If a short
pulse of frequency 7.2 GHz is introduced into the input end of the guide, how long does it take the
pulse to return to the input end? Assume that the cut-off frequency of the guide is 6.5 GHz.

6. A parallel plate waveguide has plate separation d = 1 cm and is filled with Teflon having dielectric
constant r = 2.1. Determine the maximum operating frequency such that only the TEM mode will
propagate. Also find the range of frequencies over which the TE1 and TM1 modes will propagate, and
no higher-order modes will propagate.

7. A parallel plate waveguide is known to have a cut-off wavelength for the n = 1 TE and TM modes of
c1 = 4.0 mm. The guide is operated at wavelength = 1.0 mm. How many modes will propagate?

8. A rectangular waveguide with a = 2b = 4.8 cm is filled with teflon with r =2.11 and loss tangent of 3
X 10-4. Assume that the walls of the waveguide are coated with gold (c = 4.1 X 107 S/m) and that a
TE10 wave at 4 GHz propagates down the waveguide, find: (a) d, (b) c.

9. For a parallel-plate waveguide,

a)Find the frequency (in terms of the cutoff frequency fc) at which the attenuation constant due to
conductor losses for the TMn mode is minimum.
b) What is the minimum attenuation constant at this frequency?
c) Calculate this minimum c for the TM1 mode if the parallel plates are made of copper
( c = 5.8 10 S / m ) and spaced 5 cm apart in air.
