1. Derive the expression for the attenuation of the TMmn mode of a rectangular
waveguide due to imperfectly conducting walls.
2. An attenuator can be made using a section of waveguide operating below cutoff, as
shown in the accompanying figure. If a=2.286 cm and the operating frequency is
12 GHz, determine the required length of the below-cutoff section of waveguide to
achieve an attenuation of 100 dB between the input and output guides. Ignore the
effect of reflections at the step discontinuities.

3. A circular copper waveguide has a radius of 0.4 cm and is filled with a dielectric
material having ɛr =1.5 and tanδ=0.0002. Identify the first four propagating modes
and their cutoff frequencies. For the dominant mode, calculate the total attenuation
at 20 GHz.
4. Design a rectangular waveguide with an aspectratio of 3 to1 for use in the K band
(18-26.5GHz). Assume that the guide is airfilled.
5. A tunnel is modeled as an air-filled metallic rectangular waveguide with
dimensions a=8mandb=16m. Determine whether the tunnel will pass: (a) a 1.5-
MHz AM broadcastsignal, (b a 120-MHz FM broadcast signal.
6. An air-filled cubical cavity operates at a resonant frequency of 2 GHz when excited
at the TE1O1 mode. Determine the dimensions of the cavity.
7. For a square waveguide, showt that attenuation αc is minimum for TE10 mode when
f=2.962f c .
8. A rectangular waveguide cavity resonator, having dimension a=22.86mm and
b=10.16mm and operating in TE101 mode, has aresonant frequency of 10 GHz.
Now the resonator is required to operate at 12 GHz in the same mode. Find the
change in the distance between the shorting plates required to achieve it.
9. A rectangular-cavity resonator has dimensions of a = 5 cm, b = 2 cm, and d = 15
cm. Compute: a. The resonant frequency of the dominant mode for an air-filled

1
cavity b. The resonant frequency of the dominant mode for a dielectric-filled
cavity of εr = 2.56
10. An air-filled circular waveguide is to be operated at a frequency of 6 GHz and is
to have dimensions such that fc = 0.8f for the dominant mode. Determine: a. The
diameter of the guide. b. The wavelength λ, and the phase velocity Vp in the guide.
11. A rectangular waveguide is designed to propagate the dominant mode TE10 at a
frequency of 5 GHz. The cutoff frequency is 0.8 of the signal frequency. The ratio
of the guide height to width is 2. The time-average power flowing through the guide
is 1 kW. Determine the magnitudes of electric and magnetic intensities in the guide
and indicate where these occur in the guide.
12. An impedance of (0.5 - j0.4)Zo is connected to a rectangular waveguide. A
capacitive window with a susceptance jB = j0.4Yo is located at a distance of 0.2λ
from the load.
a. Determine the VSWR on the line in the absence of the window.
b. Find the VSWR on the line in the presence of the window.
