Aug 22 – Children’s Service

On Sunday, Aug 22, we will recognize our children as they return to school.
As they commonly do, our children will serve in the roles of lector and crucifer/acolyte. The sermon
will be geared toward children…and delivered with Pastor Sally sitting on the floor. Our children will ring
bells and the music will be especially kid-friendly. During their ―Sunday school‖ time the children have
been composing the Prayers of the People to be read during worship.
Please plan on attending this service of worship in which we are particularly mindful of how we
bless and are blessed by our children.
Page 10

―Virtual‖ Morning/Evening Prayer?

At our planning meeting in February, a member of the Bishop’s Committee came up with the
idea of holding ―virtual‖ Morning or Evening Prayer services, using Webcams and Skype.
The idea is that we could worship together on-line, using video cameras on our PCs through
free, downloadable software like Skype. Here’s the problem: It appears that the ―congregation‖
would be limited to 2 people. We want to see each other as we worship. But it appears that the
video link is only available between 2 Webcams.
If you know of freeware that would enable us to hold Morning or Evening Prayer on-line and
be able to see each other using Webcams (or similar technology), please let Pastor Sally know.
Wouldn’t it be nice to see one another as we hold Morning Prayer in the comfort of our home or of-
fice?

Vedanta Society Swami

Swami Nispapanada from the Vedanta Society of St. Louis addressed our Adult Forum on July
11 following the worship service. We thank Ernie Benecke for arranging for the Swami to visit us.
The Swami gave us an overview of various branches of Hinduism and touched briefly on the differ-
ences between Western religious thought and Eastern mysticism.

A Thought about Stewardship

The most important aspect of tithing and stew-
ardship is not the raising of money for the church, but
the development of devoted Christians.

St. Francis’ Spiritual Offerings during the Week

Mondays from 5:30-6:15 p.m. at the parish house (210 S. Central) we gather for prayer.
Using Scripture appointed for that day we pray for the people of St. Francis’, those who haven’t
joined us yet, those on our prayer list, the needs of our community, and the world. We close each session
with Compline from 6-6:15 p.m.

Fridays from 10-11:30 a.m. at Michelle’s (104 S. Central) we study the Bible readings appointed
for the upcoming Sunday.
Please join us for these meetings whenever you can, whether weekly or once in a while. All are
welcome.

United Hebrew Congregation Visit

For the Adult Forum on June 27, we were hosted at the United Hebrew Congregation by Rabbi
Kaplansky. The Rabbi spent time describing the symbolism of the stained glass windows in the beautiful
worship space of the synagogue. We also viewed the Torah scroll. A Torah scroll is the first five books
of the Bible, written by hand in Hebrew. The United Hebrew Congregation’s torah scroll is unique: It is
the first Torah scroll ever created by a female scribe. One woman was responsible for scribing the entire
scroll. In addition to serving as a book used in weekly worship, a Torah scroll is a work of art.
