Collection 4 Summative Writing Assessment

William Shakespear once said, Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind. This is

meaning that only only do you love someone based on their appearance, love also focuses on the

aspect of actions by the other. In the literary work, Romeo & Juliet by William Shakespeare,

the author shows the readers the connection before two lovers despite their difficulties and it

shows the pain they will go through just to be with each other. This play tells a story of a 13

year old Capulet named Juliet and a young man Romeo Montague. The two see each other at a

party and instantly fall in love. The downside of the two lovers lives is that their families,

Capulets and Montagues, both have much hatred for each other, which causes them both to have

many problems which leads to many deaths throughout the story. The text of Pyramus &

Thisbe by Ovid, it describes another relationship of two lovers whose families did not like each

other and lived on two sides of a big rock. Both the two, Pyramus and Thisbes only

communication they could have was with a cleft in the rock, yet besides that there was no

physical intimacy between the two. In the play, Romeo And Juliet and the short story,

Pyramus And Thisbe love explored the pain, passion, and conflict of love.

In the two texts, Romeo & Juliet and Pyramus and Thisbe, both stories show the

characteristic of pain throughout the story. When having shown the pain of the characters, it

helps us connect and relate to the trauma that the characters feel. William Shakespear had stated

in the play when Juliet had been very heartbroken because a sword fight had just broke out. In

the effect of this fight, Juliets cousin, Tybalt, has been killed and her true love, Romeo, has been
banished and has to leave Verona for killing Tybalt. Juliet states when she is mourning, Tybalt

is gone, and Romeo banished; Romeo that killed him, he is banished (III. ii. 70-71). This quote

is explaining the pain of how Juliet felt when her great cousin, Tybalt, was killed and her true

love, Romeo, was banished for killing Tybalt and had to leave Verona. This is important as it

shows how Juliet deeply felt pain because of the loss of her true cousin and her deepest love that

was just banished and she was no longer going to see. In relation to this, the story Pyramus &

Thisbe, the characters had shown pain throughout the story with their emotions. The author had

stated right after the love of his life,Thisbe, had just been brutely attacked by a tiger and Pyramus

thinks his life is over, so this is after he finds out and does not want to live if the love of his life

is not there with him. This is the is Pyramus feeling pain as his lover has just passed and the

author states, And as he dies, he wretched the daggers for his gashing wounds (Ovid 96-97).

To better understand this position, readers learn here, not only the physical pain he is feeling,

because there is a dagger being ripped from his body, but also the emotional pain. The emotional

pain that caused him to stick the dagger in his body. This reveals the true pain he is feeling when

he sees the love of his life, who he wanted to be with forever, had has just been bit by a tiger. In

conclusion, the characters, Romeo & Juliet and Pyramus & Thisbe, have shown deep pain, not

only physically but emotionally throughout the story.

Another characteristic of love that was shown throughout the stories of Romeo & Juliet

and Pyramus & Thisbe was passion. When Shakespeare uses the passion between the

characters it helps us connect to if we, as the readers, have ever had a first love and how you feel

when you both cannot stand not being with each other and never wanting to be apart. In the play

the author had stated while Juliet was talking to herself about the love of her life, while Romeo is
watching close in near her by the balcony and hears Juliet say, Deny thy father and refuse thy

name or if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love and Ill no longer be a Capulet (II.ii.34-36). This

quote explains the passion Juliet Capulet had for Romeo Montague. The quote is saying that she

loves him so deeply she would leave her own family to be with him. This quote relates to passion

because it shows how deeply in love and passionate Juliet was for Romeo. In the text of

Pyramus & Thisbe by Ovid he states while Pramus was using the figurative language,

apostraphy, and talking to the wall as if it were a person and telling it to open its walls wider so

both, Pyramus and Thisbe could share a kiss. Pyramus states, And having talked in vain, the

lovers still remained apart (Ovid 34-35). This quote is explaining how the two, Pyramus and

Thisbe, might have been apart, yet that did not matter because although there was distance, they

still loved each other and found a way to make it work. This quote helps me understand the

passion throughout the story because Pyramus and Thisbe had enough passion to stay with each

other. Despite all the difficulties in their families, despite them being in two opposite sides of a

rock, they had enough passion to stay with each other and still try and be together. In conclusion,

both stories, Pyramus & Thisbe and Romeo & Juliet , both showed the passion they all had for

their significant other.

In the two texts, Romeo & Juliet and Pyramus & Thisbe, The authors, William

Shakespeare and Ovid, had both used the characteristic of conflict throughout the stories.

William Shakespeare had used conflict throughout the story when talking about the difficulties

Romeo and Juliet had to go through because their parent both did not like each other or their

families, So that had effected in both Romeo and Juliet being forbidden to see each other. In the

play, while it was talking about the love they both had for each other. Although they had love for
each other, the love could not be expressed in public. That is when the the cousin of Juliet,

Tybalt, states, Uncle this is a Montague. Our foe, A villain, he is healthier come in spite. To

scorn at our solemity this night(I.V.60-62). This quote is explaining the hatred and dislikings

that Juliets cousin, Tybalt, had for Romeo Montague. He had much hatred for that family, when

he saw him at a Capulet party, he was furious. This helps me understand the conflict in Romeo

and Juliet because it showed me that the family had no sympathy, no liking, no passion was

leaded towards that family. This helped me understand the story and their love because it helped

me understand the struggles that they had to go through to be together. In the short story,

Pyramus and Thisbe, it had also used the characteristic of conflict throughout the story. The

author, Ovid, had been describing how the two families of Pyramus and Thisbe had both disliked

each other as well. That is when the narrator had stated, ...But marriage was forbidden by their

parents(Ovid 11-12). This quote helps the reader understand how both Pyramus and Thisbe

both had parents who disliked each other and did not want them marrying anybody, especially

their enemy. This quote shows conflict because while Pyramus and Thisbe both loved each other

and wanted to be together, the parents did not want anything like that to happen. The parents of

Pyramus and Thisbe did not think it was a good idea and did not want any form of marriage. In

conclusion, the authors, William Shakespeare and Ovid, both showed the characteristic of

conflict throughout the both stories.

In conclusion, both authors, Ovid and William Shakespeare, had used the characteristics

of Pain, Passion, and Conflict throughout their stories to help the readers understand the true

emotions of the main characters of the story. Shakespeare and Ovid had used the characteristic of

pain to help connect the readers to the true hardships that all the characters had to go through.
The authors used the characteristic of passion to help the readers understand how deeply in love

Romeo was with Juliet, Juliet with Romeo, Pyramus with Thisbe and Thisbe with Pyramus and

the amount of depth they would go for their significant other. Ovid and Shakespeare had used the

characteristic of conflict to show the readers that although there were many hardships in the

relationships, the characters loved the other too much to let the hardships get in the way of their

love. The theme of these two stories of star-crossed lovers would be unconditional love.

Unconditionally love was shown throughout both stories through the hardships, pain and secrets

that all characters went through. Romeo And Juliet both had to keep their relationship from their

parents because all family would have flipped if Montagues found out Romeo as dating a

Capulet, or if Capulets found out Juliet was dating a Montague. Pyramus and Thisbe kept their

relationship a secret because their parents did not want them to even get married, let alone marry

the enemy. The theme of unconditional love makes it interesting for one to read because

everyone loves a good romance. If you say Romeo and Juliet everyone thinks, Romeo and

Juliet; love story. Then, they read it because they want to read a tragedy of one who loves

another so much, they would die, literally, just to be with them. Someone might take from this,

knowing the power of love. Love is so powerful it might even be able to move mountians. In

conclusion, both authors, Ovid and William Shakespeare had both used the facets of love to

emphasise pain, passion, and conflict.
