in schools could be used as teach-
ing tools, as communication devic-
es, and as a source of music to
help students focus.
To start, phones are full of
apps that students could use for
learning. More and more schools
are starting to allow phones be-
cause of this. Cell phones could
also be used as a calculator, note
pad, planner, or computer for re-
search. Teacher Ken Halla says,

phones] become something useful
for teachers. Like Halla, many
teachers agree that phones can be

Furthermore, in everyday

reason. Even though this is true,
appropriate uses of phones out-
weigh the negative uses.
Students should be allowed
to have phones in school. If you
are a student who goes to a school
that doesnt allow phones, fight
back. Phones can be used as learn-
ing tools and as a way to keep in
touch with parents. Maybe they can
be used for some fun here and
there, too. It is time to talk to
your principals, teachers, and su-
perintendent and fight to get the
freedom to have phones in your
school.
The Power of Friendship

All friendships have ups and downs, but true friends always come through for each other in the end. In
the story, Amigo Brothers, by Piri Thomas, the conflict has an impact on the characters, Antonio and Felix.
They have to fight each other in the Golden Gloves Championship, and it puts a strain on their friendship. They
are both best friends, and they treat each other like brothers. Yet, they still worry about losing their friendship
after their inevitable fight. But having the powerful friendship that they possess, they decide to continue with the
fight, even though they know the fight could ruin their friendship.
For a start, Antonio and Felix are best friends, and they treat each other like brothers. Both of them were
very close and they were so together in friendship that they felt themselves to be brothers (Thomas 20). Both of
them had grown up together since childhood and had lived in the same tenement. To achieve both of their child-
hood dreams of becoming lightweight champion of the world every chance that they had they worked
out (Thomas 20). Their relationship has continued to grow over time because they had know each other since
childhood and lived in the same apartment building (Thomas 20). To conclude, the boys friendship has been
very powerful since childhood.
Next, Antonio and Felix worry about losing their friendship because of the fight. They feel like they
cant keep quiet about it and have to say something to break the tension. Felix alone feels obliged to let Antonio
win and says, Ive been awake at night, pulling punches on you trying not to hurt you (Thomas 22). Yet,
Antonio is the one who first brings it up by saying, Lets stop a while, bro, I think we have something to say
to each other (Thomas 22). Finally, they both come to a conclusion that they will have a clean fight and give it
their all. Felix then states, After the fight, we can get back together, which they both agree to do. In conclusion,
the two boys fear their friendship will end due to their eminent Golden Gloves championship fight.
Antonio and Felix are best friends, and they treat each other like brothers. Antonio and Felix, in the text,
Amigo Brothers, by Piri Thomas are impacted by the conflict. In the beginning, Antonio and Felix worry about
their friendship tearing apart because of the fight. But they learn that their friendship is worth more than winning
the Golden Gloves. Finally, great friendships can always prevail through tough conflicts that come their way.
Trust is Earned, Not Given

Giving trust to someone can change his or her life. In Thank You Maam, by Langston Hughes, Roger
tries to steal from Mrs. Jones, but instead of turning him over to the cops, she helps him. Mrs. Jones choice to
trust Roger shapes his character. Mrs. Jones forces Roger to go to her house so she can help him. While
there, she treats him like he could be her son and takes care of him, which makes Roger change his behav-
ior. Roger changes because Mrs. Jones trusts him.
Mrs. Jones forces Roger to go to her house, so she can help him. She stops him from stealing her
purse: She stopped, jerked him around in front of her, put him in a half nelson about his neck, and dragged
him up the street (Hughes 128). Mrs. Jones drags Roger all the way up to her house. Then when they get
there, Roger asks if she is going to take him to the cops. Mrs. Jones says, Not with that face. I wouldnt take you
nowhere (Hughes 129). When Mrs. Jones says that, she shows her kindness and trusts in Roger. After this
happens, she asks Roger if he wants to eat and he says yes. Then Mrs. Jones says, Then well eat (Hughes
129). This show that even though he tried to steal from her, she still helps him by taking him to her home. Mrs.
Jones kindness changes Rogers behavior.
While there, Mrs. Jones treats him like her son, which makes Roger change his behavior. Roger sits on
the sofa and sees, the door was open. He could make a dash for the door (Hughes 129), but Roger doesnt
run. Instead the boy took care to sit on the far side of the room where she could see him. He did not want to be
mistrusted (Hughes 130). Roger wants Mrs. Jones to know that he has changed and can be trusted. He wants
her to be able to see him so that she knows he wont try to steal her purse again and run. He is thankful for
what she has done for him. Being treated kindly makes Roger change his behavior.
Rogers life is changed because of Mrs. Jones trust. Mrs. Jones in Thank You, Maam, by Lang-

My name is Hawi Ellemo. I am a 14 year old
refugee from Kenya. I was born on August 30th in Nai-
robi, Kenya at Coptic Hospital. My parents are
Dirisrsa, Dahabo and Sadia and they are from Ethi-
opiabut they fled their homeland for safety. I have
five siblings and their names are Dureti, Dursa,
Drartu, Damee, and Bantuu. We have been through
everything together and shared so much.
I actually started school in Nairobi, Kenya, but
school back in my homeland is so different from
school here in America. I was in 1st grade. Back in
Kenya, they dont put you in school according to
your age. They actually put you in classes according
to how much knowledge you have. I didnt get to go
to school all of the time because they made my parents
pay every month for tuition and a uniform. My parents
didnt always have enough money, so we couldnt af-
ford the payments, and I would have to stay home. My
favorite grade was 4th grade because that is when my
whole life changed. We got a fresh start and moved to
the United States of America. I actually started go-
ing to school without having to worry about the
expenses. I was focused on my grades and making
my parents proud, and I set a goal to become the
first in my family to go to college.
One significant life event that occurred was
when I was raped as a six year old. A family friend
came over to our home when we lived in Kenya and
took advantage of my innocence. I actually didnt
know what rape was becausekeep in mind, I was
only six years old. I remember not being able to walk
for a couple of days because the pain was too great.
Lets fast-forward many years later in the U.S., when
the topic of rape was introduced to me in health class,
and I began to realize what had happened to me. I was
so frightened to tell my parents out of fear that it was
my fault and I would get in trouble. So, I kept it to
myself. It started worrying me so much that I couldnt
take my mind off of it, and it was tearing me apart in-
side. I had a mental break. I was depressed and felt
completely isolated from the world. I began losing
weight and distanced myself from everyone that mat-
tered to me. My whole world turned upside-down until
it got to the point where I wanted to end my own life. I
was hospitalized for my mental breakdown and depres-
sion, and it was at this point that I began to heal.
The second significant life event that hap-
pened to me is spending half of my childhood without
my mother. My mother decided one day that she want-
ed to leave my family. My parents were struggling to
get along, so they separated. I would visit my
18 father, but my mother was still not content with
her life. She began to leave us with our aunt, but then
one day, she just abandoned us. I missed her, but I real-
ize now that her abusive nature was very unhealthy for
me, and it might be better that she did leave. It hurt to
think that she just didnt care about my sister and me.
My father learned about my mother walking out on us
and he immediately came to move us with him. I real-
ize now just how much he loves us. We were living in
Nairobi, Kenya, and my aunt refused to give us up. The
police were involved and eventually, my father and his
wife Dahobo were able to get us. We have lived with
them ever since. It took time to accept Dahobo as our
step mother; she loves my father and has raised my
sister and I as her own. She is a kind and gentle wom-
an. This event has taught me how strong I am and also
to understand that not everything is my
fault...Sometimes you are just dealing with the hand
that is dealt to you.
The final life event I want to discuss is my
journey to the United States of America. I remember
being very excited and hoping to end my miserable life
in Kenya and start fresh here in America. My parents
were also very happy and were eager for us to start our
education. They wanted us to make them proud by go-
ing very far in school. This event has helped me begin
my journey to success. I learned that impatience is the
root of all problems and you cannot force life to give
you answers; you must live life and let the lessons be
learned.
I am strong. I am fearless even. I choose these
words to describe me because even though I have en-
dured a great deal throughout my life, I keep my head
up and smile. I will not let my struggles overcome me.
I will remain focused and dedicatedbend but not
break.
I actually want to become a doctor when I
grow up. I am hoping to attend Harvard University. I
hope to live in a nice house and I picture myself being
married, after obtaining my education of course, and
raising children in a wonderful, loving family. One
famous quote that I think represents me is, I am not
what happened to me. I am what I chose to become.
Even though Ive had many ups and downs in my life, I
refuse to give in to the pain and will fight for happiness
and success.

teenage girl who turned her life around. I was in a posi-

ized depression is like a war. You either win or die
trying. I will win, I will continue to be a work in pro-

Hi, my name is Hsar Eh Soe, the Mayor
of Syracuse, NY. I would like to talk about
how to save energy. The city has a tremen-
dous energy bill, and we need your help to
reduce it. First off, I am going to talk about
nonrenewable, renewable, and fossil fuels.
Nonrenewable is an energy resource that
is available in limited amounts or that is
used faster than it is replaced in nature. Re-
newable is an energy resource that can be
used repeatedly because it is replaced natu-
rally. An example of nonrenewable energy
is fossil fuels. Fossil fuels are the remains of
ancient organisms that can be burned as an
energy source. Three types of fossil fuels
are coal, oil, and natural gas. Fossil fuels
have advantages and disadvantages. Some
of the advantages are that they are easy to
transport, widely available, and relatively
inexpensive. Some of the disadvantages are
oil spills and leaks, which can harm wildlife,
and burning fossil fuels can produce air pol-
lution. Burning fossil fuels also produces
carbon dioxide that can cause global warm-
ing.
Moving on to renewable energy re-
sources...Examples of renewables are solar
power, wind power, and hydroelectric. Each
one has some advantages and disadvantages.
For solar energy, the advantages are that it
does not pollute the air or water, and its a
theoretically inexhaustible supply. The dis-
advantages are the amount of solar power
that reaches Earths surface varies depend-
ing on the location, time of day, season, and
weather conditions, and a large area is need-
ed to collect enough solar power for a solar
power plant to be viable. For wind power,
the advantages are that it does not pollute
the air or water, and it can be used in isolat-
ed areas where electricity is unavailable.
The disadvantages are that wind turbines
can be noisy, and they can be disruptive to
wildlife, and only they only generate elec-
tricity when wind is blowing. Last, but not
least, hydroelectric (water) energy ad-
vantages are that it does not pollute the air
or water, and hydroelectric power plants are
relatively inexpensive to operate. The disad-
vantages are that dams damage wildlife hab-
itats. Dams can affect water quality and re-
duce the flow of water downstream, and
droughts can affect hydroelectric power-
plants. Try to use more renewable energy
than nonrenewable energy.
Now moving on to recycle, reuse, and
reduce. Recycle means converting waste
into reusable materials. Reuse means to use
again or more than once. Reduce means to
make smaller or less in amount, degree, or
size. We should use these three things to
keep our city clean and healthy.
Next is about ways to help homes and
schools use less energy. There are ways to
help out at home like lowering your heat
temperature in the winter: walk, do not drive
in summer, turn off the water while brush-
ing your teeth, and open the window instead
of using the air conditioner. Also, there are
ways to help out at school like turning off
the computers when not in use. Finally,
close the outside door and recycle all paper.
If you want to help out the city, these are
the ways you can help to do so. Use less fos-
sil fuels. Use more renewable energy and
recycle, reuse, and reduce. Also, dont use a
